She's Listening to TedTalks Now

She's Listening to TedTalks Now

Sias University

Henan Province, China

Spring 2012

I recently returned from China where I was teaching global leadership skills to college women.  I loved this assignment.  My students were hungry to suck up any and all information they could find.

So today, I opened this email from one of my students.I am a sucker for a note like this one.  When I was in China, it was so hard to get good news coverage.  Actually, it was hard to get any news.  I had access to China Daily which focused to giving Americans a Chinese view of our corrupt USA world.  So my  students frequently relied on just what the government feed them.  They never questioned anything they were told. Some of them would become indignant when I suggested they looked to other sources for the news. They told me they had to trust the government and they thought I had to be less jaded in my views.

What is the balance between our two worlds?

Dear Bridget,

I watched a TED talk "The Danger of One Story" which talks about how people make generalization based on only on story. It reminds me of you. You always get news from various sources, like BBC news.
really miss you.

An Update From the Oncologist

An Update from The Oncologist
An email to family and a few friends
November 30, 2020

Even though you didnt ask:

My oncologist called me this morning to discuss my pathology report.  I have LVI which I suspected would be the outcome.  Therefore, I am going to have to go through a radiation treatment. She is going to give me 6 weeks to heal and then I will start radiation some time in early January.  I have my first follow up meeting with her on Dec 4 and I will have more details at that time.

Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) indicates the presence of tumor cells in lymphatic channels (not lymph nodes) or blood vessels within the primary tumor as noted microscopically by the pathologist. LVI includes lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and lymphovascular invasion.

I’m not upset with today’s news and quite frankly, am grateful to receive this treatment.  Mom didn't have any post surgery intervention and I think that is why her cancer came back. My outcome is going to be very different.

I will keep you posted.

Lots of love and gratitude to all of you,

Bridget

AND SOME RESPONSES:

Bridget,
Even though you didn't ask me, I'm going to pray for you every day. Although I'm not sure I believe in the power of prayer, exactly, I do believe in the power of people caring about and for those they love, so I also am confident of a good outcome. There are so many people in this universe who have you to thank for love, friendship, encouragement, guidance, enlightenment, support, and just good fun spent in your company that all that good spiritual karma you get in return will keep you with us for a really long time.
I am available for a ride to the doctor's office on Friday so let me know if you want me to do that.
Love, Jaye

Thanks for the update, you have been on my mind but I didn't want to call if you weren't ready to share.  What the hell is a Lymphatic channel???  I'll have to google that.  Does it mean you are in danger of metastasis?
Give me a call when it makes sense, I got nothing going here, but I am doing school in the mornings with Xana.

KT

This is very promising. And your attitude is the best. Thanks for following up. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

KF

I did ask...
Happy you are satisfied. Grateful you were diagnosed immediately. Heal, rest and enjoy. January, a new opportunity.
Hope you finally got that beer! 😈

JM

I’m available to take you to your treatments.

He sat on our fireplace mantel for three years before the paperwork was completed and approved to allow him to be buried in Arlington, the cemetery for war heroes.  At the age of 17, he earned a purple heart and a silver star. I loved this moment.  Jack would have been so proud to know he was buried here.

SIAS University

Spring 2012

In the winter of 2012, I taught global leadership skills to college women in China.  It was a lovely gig.  And when I returned, my students wrote to me on a regular basis.  I continue to be amazed at how genuine and thoughtful they are to me.

In the passing weekend, the 8th Women's Symposium was held, a lot things going on, so much fun. During the Honoring Mothers' Tea, I was crying because I was thinking about all the facilitators I had. You are the treasure of my life. Will you come back for next Symposium? We all miss you so much.

Are You Traveling Like The Wind?

Are You Traveling Like The Wind?

SIAS University

Henan Province, China

Spring 2015

A note from a former student in China

Bridget!

Good to hear from you, I tried to apply for the master's in America in my third year, but my parents don't want me to go to America to study, they are very conservative and thought my stay out abroad for two years is a real torure to them. So I took the post-graduate entrance examination of ZHENG ZHOU university and I passed it. That university is not far from SIAS.

 How are you been doing

Alan offered me a chance to work in Guam university in January, but that time my score of my master's didn't come out, so I rejected that. In ZZ university their are many chances to go to America universities to be the exchange students. Hope I can see you one or two years later? Are you still travel around like wind?I miss you my dear friend.

Most World Academy girls went to SHANGHAI to do their interns because one of the facilitators called Andrea offered them accommodation there. June 1st will be anniversary of founding 15 years of SIAS and also our graduation ceremony,  celebration     that day will be amazing, hope you can come.

                                    Love, Gabby

A Message From Gloria: Good News

A Message From Gloria:  Good News

SIAS University

Henan Province, China

Spring 2014

In the spring fo 2012, I taught global leadership skills to a group of college women. In a few weeks, the last of my Chinese students will graduate and I will no longer know anyone at SIAS University.  That makes me a little sentimental.  So I wrote to several of them last night to tell them I was thinking of them.  here is Gloria's immediate response:

Hah! you! I miss hearing from you.  Well, you never told me what you are doing.
Last month, I got an offer from Strathclyde, a British University. I applied it because it has wonderful marketing program and doesn't require an application fee. but I decided not to study abroad for now. It is too expensive, so I think I'd better start to save money first.

I took the job offer this week at Le Meridien Zhengzhou, near SIAS. Assistant Manager of Stewarding. Salary is 2800rmb with food and accommodation covered. I actually like job offers in shanghai more for I think there are more possibilities. However I'm convinced Le Meridien might be a good start.  I will learn new things in this position.
Hugs,
Gloria

The Sunshine Project- Year Two

The Sunshine Project

Year Two

Sias University

Henan Provience, China

Spring 2013

During Spring semester in 2012, I taught leadership skills to college women in China.  I loved this assignment.  I had them design service projects which is something that was unfamiliar with all of them.  But we were able to get a few of them up and running.

Gloria started the Sunshine Project last year and she and her classmates are now ready to take it to the next level.  I can't believe how much the women in the WAFW have grown as leaders in just this last year.  They seem so much more sophisticated since I saw them a year ago.  Gloria just got back from a trip to Beijing where she presented her ideas to some potential financial supporters, I am proud of her and the other women on the committiee.

Sunshine Angels Project-Children are the Future
Children are lovely and innocent. They deserve a healthy and wonderful life.
Because of diseases and disability, their life is extremely different.
However, they are just like us. They need to love and be loved.

Helping them to be able to speak
Step Three:
Empowering kids to express their talents and make their own living.
Getting professions to teach them working skills
Organizing them to make simple bracelets and sell the outcomes in our market.

Losing My Election- November 5, 2014

 ON THIS DAY on Facebook

Reflections on Losing My Election

MD State Senate race

District 35

2014 Election

I just got back from Maryland after spending yesterday at the polls in support of my amazing friend and colleague,
Bridget E Kelly
, who was running for state senate in district 35. At the polls, we were amazed by a virtual conga line of people who stopped to tell Bridget that her message of "community, compromise, consensus and commitment" and "every voice matters; every voice heard" resonated personally with them. Armed with a modest budget, no political experience, a cadre of loyal supporters from both Pennsylvania and Maryland, and a passion for governmental reform, Bridget knocked on a minimum of 100 doors EVERY DAY in her district. She visited town halls, libraries, veterans’ hospitals, the Chesapeake, NAACP meetings, churches, schools, neighborhoods, businesses, prisons, and homeless encampments. I've seen her spend 20 minutes with an individual who was adamant against voting for any democrat, listening to his concerns, and wishing him well even when she knew she was not going to get his vote. Yesterday, Bridget and her campaign were caught in the anti-democrat backlash that swept not only Maryland but a lot of the nation. Although she had 11,000 people buck the trend and vote for her, often splitting their vote to do so, she was unsuccessful. In the end, Bridget did not lose: the voters in District 35 in Harford and Cecil Counties did. And what a shame for them. Bridget ran a clean campaign and refused to bad mouth her opponent in any way; but I am willing to bet he is not going to pound the pavement like she did or take the time to interact not only with the power brokers but also the forgotten, the underrepresented, the disenfranchised, the poor and the people who exist on the outskirts of our society. I hope for the voters in district 35 I am wrong. As for Bridget, she remains committed to the people of Maryland and summed up her experience with this quote: "you don't need to be elected to step up and serve". What a class act. Bridget, it's an honor to know you and an honor to have worked on your campaign. It's an experience I'll never forget. --Marilyn

What a funny feeling today. Even though I didn't win, I don't feel any loss. I am proud of my team and can't thank
Kathy Bandos
,
Marilyn Lake-DellAngelo
and Janice Lion enough for all of their efforts.
Kimberly Wagner
was a great treasurer. Over 60 people volunteered to make phone calls, knock on doors or send out mailers. And yesterday, I stood at my voting poll and one person after another stopped me and told me they were cheering for me. While the numbers just weren't enough to get me to Annapolis, the encouragement I received from so many strangers have shown me that you don't need to be elected to step up and serve.
