Carina's Summer Experiences

Carina's Summer Experiences

Henan Province, China

August 2012

During the spring of 2012, I taught leadership skills to college women in china.  I loved, loved, loved their company.  They were so grateful for my time and so eager to learn.  We would sit for hours every day and just talk.  And when I left China, I really missed them.  And they missed me.  And so they wrote to me all of the time.  Here is Carina's letter about her summer of 2012.

Hi,Bredget, it’s been a long time; how is your summer vocation? Anything interesting happened? And  I have so many want to tell you about my summer vacation.

I am going to be a junior officially in September. This summer vocation I have two jobs. One is an assistant for an English summer camp, I love this job, before this, many people told me that being an assistant in a summer camp was hard and meaningless, it’s all about taking care of children. And before this job, I really just treated it as a job, I thought its just seven days and I would not have some feeling about it. But I was wrong. I have to say it is kind of hard, you know the children is energetic and naughty, they keep challenging our patience. But children are always children; you cant blame them for their energy and naughty. They are pretty, frank and innocent. They made us laugh; they cared for us and comforted us when we were unhappy. Besides, during these days, all the students and teachers lived together, we were like a big family, we ate, slept, study, danced and had fun every dayI like working in team. Its much more fun than working alone.

During the seven days, I have learned my first complete dance and done a lot of funny things. We also played some games. Like we put a empty bottle on the ground near the dustbin and waited to see how many people would pass by before the bottle was picked up and thrown into the dustbin, then we shall clap our hands for the people who picked it up. Like we played death, one people in our team went to find a stranger and asked for help, then he take this person to the place we all stayed, when the person were taken there, we all pretended to pass out and see what reactions they would have. Its very funny. I have some pictures for you, Carrol and Miriam.  I feel so lucky to have this job; I spent a happy week and met some kind, funny people. This experience also makes me understand that you will never know something unless you get involved personally.

The other job is a translator for our schoolbut now I quit. Cause itnot like its supposed to be. We were told ittranslation, thats why so many people wanted to get this job, regardless it’s low payment. Walso went through a very difficult test. But the people who get admitted now are doing something has nothing to do with translation. I feel hurt. I give up other opportunities to get this job, all I think is to do something related to my major, my major is business EnglishI am eager to find some translate jobs. Now I am going to post a resume online and hope that I could get a job to translate during the vacation and in the spare time when I become a junior.

This is all about my summer vocation .Now I have no job and plan to study for a major test next semester. Do you have something interesting? What is your plan this year?

Have a good day!!!

I Hope We Can Communicate No Language Barriers.

An email from a former student

Bitter Woman IPA

 Bitter Woman

IPA
Tyranea Brewery

Of course, the name attracted me.  So I ordered a pint and it is a better beer.  It is full of hops and bites going down.  The bitterness lingers for a few seconds.

When I got my bill it read "1 Large Bitter Woman." How apropos!

It IS A Shallow Way

It Is A Shallow Way

SIAS University

Henan Province, China

2015

I taught leadership skills to college women in China. When I asked my students, which UN Millennium Goal was most important to them, Tina said the goal to end poverty was most important.  There is her written response:

"Hungry is a big problem, also a small problem. And I want to love this problem completely. In my opinion, we should encourage them to do a job and call for government to support them job opportunity, not just give them food and money. It is a shallow way."

Hearing from Diane

On Dec 6, 2020, at 4:51 AM, Diane Simon wrote:

Hi,
Just checking up on you. Feeling a lot more optimistic since the election. It has been a rough four years. Hope you are doing your best to enjoy this holiday season. We must schedule lunch and a visit to the new Springfield High. I’m doing my best to avoid COVID exposure so I guess the lunch suggestion won’t work right now. Anyway, please respond to let me know how you are making out. Keep your head up! 😝❤️

MY RESPONSE:

Why were you up at 5AM, sending out emails?

It is great to hear from you. And yes, I am so relieved with the election.  I just don't  know what I would have done if that orange idiot won again. i would have lost all hope in the world.

On a personal note, I have uterine cancer.  My prognosis is very good.  I just had a radical hysterectomy right before Thanksgiving and that went well.  I need to recuperate for another month and then I am going to start a radiation series and hopefully, they will get it all. This is the same cancer that my mother had.  So my oncologist promises to be as aggressive as possible.  I am optimistic and expect a full recovery. In the interim, I am in quarantine so that COVID does not interrupt my treatment schedule.

I am finishing 2020 on a high:
  •      My prognosis is good
  •      No trump
  •      Kamala will become our first FEMALE president
  •      one niece just got engaged
  •      two new babies were born in my family in the last 4 months
  •      I’ve saving a ton on money since I don't have any travel expenses
  •      I have a ton of support from family and friends
  •      COVID has only been an inconvenience for me; it hasn’t devastated my life, my finances or my family.  I am one of the lucky ones (once again)
Let’s get together when we can.

Bridget

Oak Creek Brewery

 Oak Creek Brewery

SEDONA, AZ
2018

This place seems more interested in the food rather than the beer so that's always a disappointment for me. I wanted to get a flight but 7 beers of 5 oz pours was the only option and that is just too much beer for me to consume and drive. So I got the two seasonal beers.  I don't know what they were names as they are listed nowhere on the menu, the draft board or the website (which indicates that the beers aren't really important to them).

One beer was a vanilla, mango IPA and it was too sweet for my taste.  The other was a coffee IPA and it was smooth and full of taste.

This was the only brewery in Sedona but I wouldn't go back here.

Sly Fox brewery

 Sly Fox Brewery

Phoenixville, PA

A flight consists of six 5 oz beers (30ozs). That's a bit more beer that I want to have if I have driving. So the next time, I will bring a designated driver and get two flights because the beers were delicious.

 I had:

  • Mud Porter- yes
  • O'Reilly Stout- yes
  • Odyssesy Imperial IPA- yes
  • Olicana Ale- yes
  • Chester County Bitter- yes
  • 360 IPA- yes
And I liked them all and there were others that I wanted to try.  The food was good and the service was excellent in spite of the fact that the waiter had too big an area for one person.

All Souls' Day- 2017

 ON THIS DAY

On this ALL SOULS Day, too many of my former students are on my mind. REST IN PEACE to my students from Loyalsock HS, Jenkintown HS, Strousburg HS and Springfield HS
From 1981-2010
It’s been great to reconnect with my students on social media. To date, I’m connected one way or another to almost 3,000 of my 10,000 students. For years, they left us after high school and we never heard from them again and I often wondered what happened to them. Did the superstars stay on top? Did the marginal students find more success in their adult world? Were they happy and productive? Did they have children and now view the world differently?
I have to say that I’ve been really pleased with so many of their success stories.
But the downside of staying connected to these people is learning of their deaths. I am losing too many, too soon, too senselessly. Drug overdosing seems to be the biggest culprit for many of these young deaths. Regardless of how they go, each death is a loss to me.

  • I pretty much left Stroudsburg in my rearview mirror after graduation and didn’t make any effort to stay in touch with anyone until recently. That said…some of names on this list surprise me. As a paramedic I deal with death more often than most…still…it gives one pause to read this list with only the memory of the fallen as teenagers with brimming with potential and their whole lives laid before them.
I don’t have a great many positive memories of my school life in Stroudsburg…but you were always one of my fondest. You never ceased trying to understand us and, when necessary, reach out to those you knew were foundering. Being an educator wasn’t a job for you…it was a calling…and it showed. The list itself is somewhat shocking…though the fact that you kept it is not.
You had a lasting impact on me as a young man and I have always been grateful for your being such a lasting and positive influence. Though you might have forgotten, one of the last times I saw you was following a school board meeting towards the end of my senior year where you met my mother. You knew far more about me than I had previously realized and it only reinforced my belief…that you really did try to know each and every one of us…as impossible a task as it might have been.
Thank you for everything Dr. Kelly…I know I’m not the only one that feels this way…doesn’t make it any less important for you to hear it.

    • Thank you John and I do remember this conversation. We walked out of the board meeting together and stopped to chat right outside the cafeteria.

  • I filled up with tears as I read this list of names. Wonderful young people gone too soon. Thank you Bridget for loving all all of these students without one ounce of prejudice or judgement. They loved and respected you back. May they all rest in peace…

  • Thank you for being such a caring person. I always highly respected you and the way you cared for us at your school. You touched a lot of students at Stroudsburg High School.

    • This isn’t exactly the post I should make this comment here but I’m gonna go ahead and say it. Reading these heartwarming comments about Dr. Kelly are 100% accurate. We were very blessed to have such a wonderful Principle who genuinely cared for us students. Having one child who just graduated at Stroudsburg this past June and my second being a Junior still, they certainly do NOT have that, in fact they have the opposite and it truly makes me sad. Dr.

you truly were an amazing, compassionate Principle and I know many of us can’t thank you enough! Thank you for never forgetting those we lost!

  • You are an amazing person and have been an example in caring for your students and staff. I am proud to know you. Your contact with former students is a credit to you as well as to them. Thank you for the example you have set for education professionals.

  • So heartbreaking to read so many familiar names. Many whose smiling faces popped into my head as I read through this list. Mrs. Kelly, you are a real hero, to hold so many of your students for so long. I remember you fondly from my time at SHS. I believe was also lost Mike Schecter class of 1992. Too many of my friends on that list 😢

  • Thanks, Bridget, for this beautiful, if sad, reminder. Too many on that list. Kat and I were talking about Bob Gordon just last night. We need to remember and maybe cry sometimes.
