Getting Rid of My Gall Bladder

Getting Rid of My Gall Bladder
West Chester, PA
November 26, 2018

OMG, what an easy procedure!!!!

I had four episodes of extreme abdominal pain in just a two moth period.  The last episode involved vomiting which was my trigger that something was going on that wasn't go to go away just because I chose to ignore the situation.

After a visit to the doctor and a series of blood tests and an ultrasound, it was concluded that the gall baller had to come out.  However, there was one slight problem.  I had a big trip to the Arctic Tundra that I didn't want to miss.  The surgeon didn't really suggest that it was OK to go.  She did warn me of the risk of my gall bladder rupturing and being stuck in a place where there was minimal to no medical care.  She had a good point but was not compelling enough to keep me from going. So, the day after we met, I was off to Churchill, Canada.

So I went to the Arctic Tundra for the next week and come home and two days later, had the surgery. It was painless and I was up and around in two days.  I can't believe someone cut four holes in to me and I felt fine.

September 2018

September 2018
PA, NJ, MD, London, Wales, Jersey (UK)

1- S- PA- my sleep problem is becoming annoying.  I tossed and turned until 630 AM this morning.  I got up twice and took a dose of some sleep aid and that was of no avail.  So now I am dragging my sorry ass through life. I was supposed to go to Jill's house today but I did not have enough energy to make on that drive.

2- SU- PA- this day has slipped by.  I spent the afternoon in the lounge, talking with fellow Penn Staters about the game yesterday.  I didn't watch it but it must have been a nail biter.

3- M- PA- It is Labor Day, the end of the summer as we know it.  This day makes me melancholy. I hate the end of the summer.  I intended to go to the pool in the early afternoon  but it is so damn crowded that I waited until later afternoon. it was still crowded but the water was lovely.  Jon grilled dinner for all of us.
My sweet lliot

4- TU- PA- I am having a Faculty Meeting with the retired teachers to commentate another school year without us. This is my 9th school year left behind.  I can't believe I have been retired this long.  I am really content with my life.

5-W- PA- It's hot, hot, hot today.  The heat index predict a 104F day. I had to run to MD in the AM to meet with my accountant to address a damn tax problems.  I was audited and its is going to cost me another $800. Damn, damn, damn.  So I stopped by a beer distributor on the way home and spent hours, in the pool, drinking beer.  Life is Better than it was in the AM.

6- TH- PA- I am stuck on another Podcast, Heaven's Gate, the story about a religious cult in the 1990's.  Damn, there are a lot of kooks in this world. Went and got a haircut which is one task that always causes anxiety for me.  And she cut it too short.  Then I went to Phyllis and Steve's apartment to watch the highlights of the PSU game last Saturday.  Even though I knew the end result, it was stressful to watch.  Later I watched the Eagles game in the lounge.  The game lasted until after midnight and it was a nail biter.

7- F- PA- After 20 years, I met up with Lynn Talbot for lunch.  Susan, her daughter, joined her and it great fun to see them. I gave a big shout out to our waiter in front of his boss and she, in turn, sent me a free flight of desserts (peach cobbler a la mode, creme bruelle and brownies a la mode). As Lynn said, "it pays to be nice."

Philly
8- S- PA- Jaye and Dom came over for dinner and then we headed back to my place to watch the PSU game. We won handsomely but it was still hard to be too condiment after last week's pathetic win.  As Dom was leaving my place, he told me, "I really like this place."  I told him I do too. It's John Staudt's 36th bday! It rained like hell today.

9- SU- PA- Sharon's bday- Tricia had a family party for her and we watched the Steelers terrible game.  In the last three days, I have had enough football for the entire season. It's Kevin and Emily's first wedding anniversary.  It rained like hell today.  Two days ago, it was 95F and today it is 59F.  I'm cold.

10-M- PA- it's raining and raining and rain: a prelude to the hurricane coming up from the gulf this weekend.  I solidified all of my plans for my trip to Wales next week.  Can't wait. Headed over to Slit Rail Tavern for happy hour.

listening to Van Morriso
11- TU- PA- it's chilly and feels like Fall.  I was going to jump in the pool as a personal protest to the dramatic change in weather from last week.  But I went tot he movies instead: Juliet Naked. And, of course, it rained.

12- W-MD- went down to my house to check on it before the big hurricane this weekend.  As usual, Joann and I went to Johnnie's Sushi House and overate. The sun peaked out for an hour today.

13- TH- I had another rough night of sleep.  So, at 5:30 AM, I took two sleeping pills and tried to fall asleep.  I woke up at 2:30 PM. I need to take these pills at 11PM.  I was wide awake for our Beer Club. The event started out slow but we eventually got kicked out of the lounge for being too loud, too late at night.
Welsh Rare Bit

14- F- PA-I've spent too much time today watching weather reporters stand outside in NC and get blown around by the wind just so we can see how windy it is as this horrendous hurricane approaches.  I am well aware that 75 mile winds are dangerous. Late in the afternoon, Jill came to the lounge and asked me if I want to the Stolen Sun Brewery and off we went for a beer.  And then I came home and took an evening nap.

15-S- NJ- spent the afternoon with Willie Nelson and Van Morrison and Jaye and Dom at the Camden Waterfront.  The day was perfect. The music was great.  I love days like this one.

16- SU- PA- I wandered through the downtown food festival by myself and didn't eat anything because everything looked too damn good and I thought I shouldn't get started.  So I came back to my apartment building and hung in the pool for the afternoon. The pool closes today for the season. I've really enjoyed the pool this summer.

17- M- PA- the rain is back. Everything is dreary and wet.  And I am ready to get started on my trip to the UK tomorrow. I've done some cleaning and some packing but mostly I've been antsy and ready to leave town.

18-T- PA/ NJ-  I leave for Wales and Jersey (UK). It was a day of travel from PA to NJ to Iceland to Gatwick to Victoria Station to Paddington to my hotel. I must say that my layover in Iceland was delightful.  I had a smoked salmon sandwich on a hard croissant bread and a delicious IPA. I'm going to have the same thing on the way back.

19-W- London- I slept for the afternoon in my sweet, little, old  Victoria hotel on the third floor. Later in the evening I headed to a local pub for bangers and masher for dinner.  I tried an IPA but didn't like it. I went back to my hotel to rest only to find out that my ferry to Jersey was cancelled due to high winds and I also mistakenly booked a room tonight for me in Wales.

20- TH- Wales- I had to rebook my trip to Jersey for one day later and now I have very little time there which is a disappointment. But all is well because I had my Welsh Rare Bit which was delicious. And, because that wasn't enough food, I also had a delicious cheese platter with 8 different cheeses. I also found the local tap room that sells Brain brewery beer. I was not impressed.  As a matter of fact, I walked away from one of my beers.  It was just tasteless.

21- F- Wales- the wind and the rain are so intense today that it is not safe for me to walk outside at the moment. In the PM, I got to walk down to the bay harbor and check out a few spots. I visited the Piedmont house which was an old coal house. I had some of those little, flat cakes that people raved about.  Mine were traditional and chocolate/orange cakes.  In the evening, I visited two breweries (Crafty Devil and Pipes Brewery) and had a wonderful time with strangers.

22- S- Wales/ Poole, England- today was a struggle.  Cardiff was filled with drunk soccer fans this morning as the home team challenged Manchester.  These fans make Philly fans seem tame.  Then my train to Poole was cancelled due to rail problems.  So I spent the day, hopping through the south of England, trying to get here. In light of the fact that my ferry has been canceled, I will be here two days and the rain and the wind are supposed to be tough tomorrow.

23- SU-Poole (UK)- My ferry to the Isle of Jersey was cancelled today due to bad weather. My backup trip to Old Harry Rock in the Jurassic Harbor was cancelled due to rough waters. And this is the nicest day I have had in the UK yet. I am left with no other recourse than to seek shelter at the oldest pub in the harbor: Poole Arms.

24- M- Jersey (UK)- I crossed the English Channel today and it was a slight thrill. I went on the Condor, a large catamaran that carried 250 cars and over 500 passengers.  The ship was clean, comfortable, had a cafe and a viewing deck and pleasant.  Unfortunately, it took us much longer than expected because the ship was so backed from yesterday's delay.  So I didn't get in to port until 4:30 and didn't get a taxi for another 45 minutes.  So I forfeited my plans to go to the damn zoo.  And with taxis being so scares on this island, it is going to be difficult to get around tomorrow.

25- TU- Jersey/London- I finally made it to the Durrell Zoo, my reason for coming all the way to Jersey in the first place.  I spent the whole day day here.  And then I flew back to Gatwick where I will catch my flight home tomorrow.

26- W- London/ Iceland/ NJ/ PA- Spent the day traveling home. I arrived home @ 1130PM.  I was tired.

27- TH- PA- spent the day glued to the SCOTUS Hearings.  Kavanugh is defending himself against allegations of sexual assault in high school.  I think he was stunned that a rich, white boy could actually be held accountable.

28- F- PA- The Senate took a vote to advance the sex offender.  But there will be an FBI investigate.  This is a small, small victory for women and the USA. I watched Michael Moore's new movie: Fahrenheit 11/9 where he lays out a case to mistrust the RNC, the DNC, the established legislative body and all who make our laws today.  As a nation, we are in trouble. WE HAVE LOST TOLERANCE OF EACH OTHER!

29- S- PA- Penn State vs Ohio State.  We could and should have won this one.  Damn, I hate to lose to OSU.

30- SU- PA- it's a beautiful day, something we haven't had much lately and I am in the lounge of the apartment building, sitting just a short distance from the loud crowd, cheering on the Eagles.  I don't care about the Eagles and I am still made that PSU didn't win last night.

  • The David Letterman show- I went to one fo his first shows when he moved to NYC.
  • The Jon Stewart show- I went to one of his last shows.

  • Phantom of the Opera
  • Les Miserable- I love this play
  • Good night Saigon
  • Off Broadway
  • Walking the Brooklyn Bridge
  • The 9/11 Memorial is too sad.

Riding A Camel

 Riding A Camel
My Parents
Fall 1984
Egypt

My parents went to Egypt in 1984 and they hated it.  My mother got sick and dehydrated and had to be hospitalized.  My dad thought the country was "a filthy, dirty place." And they were so glad to get home.  So I was surprised to see their pictures which gave the appearance of two people having a good time

They weren't photo people but for some reason, they had about 50 copies of this particular photo.  I don't know why and when I quested both of them, they both thought the other was behind this aberrant act of ordering too many copies of the photo.

When they decided to downsize and move to a smaller home, they were going to throw them all out but I secured them.  I had an idea of how to use them.

At the time, I was a high school principal and every time a staff member did something very positive, I would meet with that person and present him/her with one of these photos. I told the recipients that I wanted to give them something near and dear to my heart.  They anticipated something of value and I gave them this stupid photo.  I thought I was being hysterical and some of them thought so as well.  Others, not so much.

Anyway, after a few of them had been distributed, the acquisition of the photos sort of became honorable.  And faculty started displaying them on bulletin boards in their classrooms for everyone to see.

One student asked a teacher, "What's with all of these photos of the old people on the camel?"

She flippantly replied, "I don't know them.  I just really like the photo of the camel?"

February 2019

February 2019
PA, DE, Haiti, Jordan, Israel

1- F- DE/Haiti- we left Nadiv's house at 3AM and made our way to the JFK airport to Port-au-Prince and then to Jacmel.  It was great to be back in Haiti, this country that puts a spell on me.

2- SA- Haiti - it was a full day and it felt like two days and we saw and did so much. We visited a local art gallery. Charlotte Charels stopped by the hotel to greet us.  We went tot he Salvation Army to see what changes had occurred since I was last there 5 years ago. We spent the afternoon at the Foreign Lanusgage Institute (FLI) and sat in on classes and engaged in discussions with students.  We had dinner with the staff.  We came back to the hotel and hosted some friends for drinks and conversation.

3- SU- Haiti/PA- today was a long travel day from Jacmel to Port-au-Prince to JFK airport to a wonderful Jewish deli in NJ to DE to PA.

4- M- PA- OMG, I was a lazy ass today.  It was a gray day and I was overwhelmed by my trip to Haiti so it was an effort to get out of bed.  But it was rolling around to 5PM and I just had to get up. I did listen to podcasts all day so it was not a complete waste of time. And then I got dressed and went to a town hall meeting to listen to the mayor of West Chester.

5- T- PA-  I joined  Mary Graham and others at the Love City Brewery in Philly. These people are good company.

6- W- PA- Today's focus was my painful tooth and a trip to the dentist.  There is a new dental hygienist and I don't like her.  And I may have to get a second root canal operation on an existing crowd.  Damn, damn, damn.  And I had to order a new mouth guard for $701.  What a rip-off.

7- TH- PA- I went to the movies with Kathy Flatley.  We went to see If Beale Street Could Talk and I wasn't overly impressed with it even though I love James Baldwin's writing.

8- F- PA- Two of my students were in a production of the Vagina Monologues in a local theatre so Phylis, Marianna Mangan and her family joined me for the show.  When the play first showed, it was hailed as bawdy, brazen and edgy.  Now, 20 years later, it was tamer than I had anticipated.

9- SA- PA- Tricia Bill and Lauren came over for dinner.  We went to Iron Hill and then came back to my apartment building for a cup of coffee.  Some neighbors met up with us in the lunge and it was fun.

10- SU- PA- not much activity today as it was windy and cold.  I just ran a few errands.

11- M- PA- It snowed all day, nothing heavy but enough to cause people to cancel most events in the evening.  But my event wasn't cancelled.  I was ushering at the Uptown Theatre for the primmer viewing of Live the Stream, the story of legendary Joe Humphreys, a world renown fly fisherman.  Sharon and Glenn joined me and it was fun.  I was glad we all made the effort to go.

12- TU- PA- It snowed through the night so my damn dental appointment was pushed back to later this morning and the dentist instead I get a root canal done on an existing root canal.  Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn.  That was a mere $800.  And the cap is now damaged so I need a new cap and this tooth is pissing me off.

13- W- PA-  Phyliss and I watched The Wife this afternoon.  Glenn Close is up for an Oscar nomination for her role.  She was good but I don't think it was her best.  Afterwords, John and Debbie and I went to Bar Avalon for mussels.

14- TH- DE- lunch with Betty and Shelly Evans at Stewart's Brewpub in Bear.

15- F- PA- tonight we had whiskey club and it was packed with people.  I liked the vibe of the event even though I can't stand whiskey.

16- SA- PA- I ushered at the Uptown Theatre for the showing of nominated animates short films and live action short films.  Man,  most of them were so dreadful to watch.  They were filled with violent and despair.

17- SU- PA- I met up with Patricia and Lauren and went tot he Colonial Theatre to watch the showing of nominated short documentary films.  They were also difficult to watch as the themes were filled with death, racism, loneliness, desperation and despair.  On a positive note, Brian turned 49 today.  I cant believe my baby brother is that old.

18- M- PA- It's President's Day and facebook is filling up with photos of Obama. Trump is getting burned for his bogus National Emergency and our democracy is rotting away.  An indictment from Mueller 's investigation would really pick up my mood today.

19- TU- PA- I was at the dentist again today and she was going to work on my damn tooth again but i convinced her to wait until i came back from my month long trip tot he Middle East.  Thank God.  I no sooner got home that i got a notice from the airlines to reschedule my flight out tomorrow due to the pending snow storm.  At 330, my flight had been changed to 730 tonight.  I had to hustle

20- W- London/Jordan- I traveled all day and now I am out of sorts. I'm exhausted and wide awake.

21- TH- Jordan- first impressions: it's clean, dense in the city area, Muslim, quiet, orderly.

22- F- Jordan- we roamed the streets of Amman and I felt that I could have been in any town in Europe. The white cities stretched for miles at a time.

23- SA- Jordan- i went to a Turkish Bath House and I got beaten up by women with loofa pads. I got rubbed, scrubbed and tubbed.  I loved it.

24- SU- Jordan

25- M- Jordan- We spent the day in Petra and it was a magnificent day.

26- TU- Jordan/ Israel-  We were up and on the road by 730 AM and headed to the Dead Sea Highway to cross the border in to Israel.

27- W- Israel- We spent most of the day at an olive farm. And I loved the enthusiasm of the family as they explained every aspect of making the best olive oil in Israel.

28- TH- Israel- OMG, it was cold and windy and I struggled all day with this chilling weather.  We started the day at a farm and we helped trim the fruit trees.  We then went to an ancient ruins near the Mediterranean Sea and the rough waves and sporadic rain kept us wet.  Then we went off to the top of Mount Carmel.  Later I had dinner with Yacov and Marie.  It was great to see her in Israel.

Favorite Types of Movies

Favorite Types of Movies

I love to go to the movies.  I could go twice a week if my schedule allowed it and there was enough for me to see. And there are some movies that come out in the previews and I put their release dates on my calendar.  I don't necessary have to see them on the first day of the release but I do rush to the theatre so that I don't procrastinate and miss the opportunity to see it on the big screen.

1- surfing movies- I have never surfed in my life.  I cant even swim.  In 1990, I got caught in a riptide and my confidence in hanging at the edge of the ocean waves is shot to hell.  But I am enamored with surfing movies ever since I saw The Endless Summer in 1964. I loved Into the Liquid.

2- Mt. Everest themed movies- I must have 20 DVDs on this topic.
  • In Thin Air
  • Everest
3- anything that takes place in India- I love, love love India and I cant get enough of it.  I loved Slumdog Millionaire, Born to the Brothels, The Darjeeling Limited, Life of Pi, The Best Exotic Magnolia Hotel, Namesake and the list goes on and on.

4- Wes Anderson- I have seen all of his movies and I own most of them (on DVD) and I watch them over and over again. Darjeeling Limited is my favorite.

5- Werner Herzog- he takes on mundane topics and makes them come to life. I've watched his movie on Antartica about five times.  I loved his movie where he followed trappers in Siberia.

6- Nature themes
  • Wings Migration
  • March of the Penguins
  • Born in China

7- All Harry Potter movies and the new offshoots of this magical theme- I have seen them all and I love the magic.

8- Movies made from my favorite female books, where the women are the heroes.:
  • The Joy Luck Club
  • Eat, Pray, Love
  • Color Purple
  • Freid Green Tomatos
  • Hidden Figures
  • Babette's feats
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • The Help
9- National Geographic Movies

10- IMAX movies- I particularly like these moves when I am traveling to different regions of the USA and the tourist welcome center offers one of these movies to show me what is ahead for me to see.  I just saw on on the Grand Canyon a few months ago and we flew right in to the heart of the canyon.  It was thrilling.

There's No Us and Them

I was asked to respond to a questionnaire for me high school Alumni magazine (Mater Matters- Spring 2019).  There are my responses:

 Alumnae
“AdventuroUS in Mercy…There’s no us and them, just us.”

Name:   Bridget E. Kelly
Year of Graduation:  1973

How were you adventurous in Mercy as a student?   Merion taught me to be adventures.  We had so many great assemblies and field trips which fostered my curiosity about the world outside our school building.  I learned to ask questions, seek new ideas and try new things. I don’t remember much of my geometry or French or biology.  But I remember the plays and the dance companies and the guest speakers who challenged our thinking.  I remember going in to Philadelphia and visiting museums. I remember being exposed to people, ideas and views that were different from my background.  Merion taught me to be confident to embrace the world.

How did your high school years inspire future adventures?  During Easter break of my senior year (1973), I went on the school trip to Italy and loved, loved, loved every minute of it. After I came back from this trip, I wanted to see the world. And I haven’t stopped traveling since this maiden voyage.

Pictured here doing….      It’s November 2007. I was in the Wendel Sea in Antarctica.  I was on a larger ship, waiting my turn to board one of these two zodiac boats there.   It was a little warmer this day than previous days but still -10F.  So, we decided to take a ride to explore Glacier Bay in the zodiac boats.  We bundled up as usual and make our way down the gangway and slipped into the crowded boat.  The ambient air was uncomfortably cold as we settled on to a space on one of the sides of the boat.  We snuggled together in hopes of just a little more body heat. And then we took off and zipped into this cove of ice sculptures.  We are surrounded by nothing but massive walls of glaciers and ice. We were awe struck by the splendor and magnitude of the ice. This beauty left us speechless. This trip humbled me as it was so obvious that I was just a small, insignificant part of this beautiful place in this magnificent world.

What are your daily adventurous? Work? Family? Service? Hobbies?

When I was working as a high school principal, I focused on what I could do to enrich the lives of my students. I worked every day to ensure that students had multiple opportunities to reach their potential.  I worked to make our environment as safe as possible for them to take reasonable, educated risks. It was important to me that students felt empowered to discover and follow their own path of success.

Now that I am retired, I have changed my mission to a more global focus.  I work every day to eradicate poverty by empowering women and children.  I serve as a citizen lobbyist for CARE International.  I have taught for the World Academy for the Future of Women which teaches global leadership skills to college women in China, Bangladesh and Nepal.  I am affiliated with the Haiti Family Initiative which offers wellness programs in Jacmel, Haiti. I have served on numerous nonprofit boards that offer serves to the underserved.  All of these experiences have taught me the value and personal benefits of service to others.

What map did you follow to get to where you are personally and/or professionally?

I earned my Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in education.  I spent most of my career as a school leader.  During this time, I encouraged my students to explore their own ideas. I worked to provide them with opportunities to map out their future paths.

Personally, I traveled every chance I could when I was working and now that I am retired.  And I preferred to travel to places that challenged me physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  I tend to visit countries that did not offer the best accommodations or sanitation but showed me how so many people in this world truly live.  I have been to orphanages in Tibet, a maternity ward in Tanzania, a nomad’s home in Mongolia, the township dwellings in South Africa (right before the end of Apartheid), a shaman’s hut in Peru, a hospital in rural China, Buddhist temples in Bhutan, I’ve slept on a dirty blanket in the Sahara Desert, under millions of stars. I’ve met with village chiefs and watched thousands and thousands of wild animals roam the Serengeti.

All of these experiences have shown me how rich the world truly is and how insignificant I am. My impact on this world is really nothing but a fleeting moment’s gesture. But I’ve learned that small gestures of humanity go a long way to making this world a more civilized place.  If I’ve learned anything in my travels, I’ve learned “There’s no us and them, just us.”

They were mazes, filled with cows, feral dogs, tea merchants, motor cycles, people, beggars, noise, hustling, smells, temples, prayer alters, cow dung, teas, incense, aromas, congestion, debris, food, music, merchandise, high priests, lost souls and me.

This Pain In The Ass Monkey

This Pain In The Ass Monkey
Varanasia, India
July 9, 2015

This pain in the ass monkey tried to break in to my room for the entire week that I was in India.  OMG, it I want so damn afraid of him, I would have wrestled him to the ground and beaten the shit out of him.  Instead, I feared his very presence. I hated him.

What's Left

What's Left
My Knowledge Base is Fading Fast
Merion Mercy Academy
1967-1973

There isn't much left in my pea brain of what I learned in high school.
I'm  on the right, pretending to be studying.
  • French- I didn't learn a whole lot in high school so it was easy to forget this little bit. I know RSVP.  I can repeat the first 7 slides of the first lesson in French in 7th grade.  I can say Merci.  I can ask where is the toilet but I can not understand any answer that is given to me.
  • Latin- I know that the framer, the sailor and the poet all end in 1st case feminine; all other first case nouns are masculine.  I don't remember what constitutes first case.
  • Geometry- side equals side equals side is the only rule I remember about this dreadful subject matter.  I do remember that we were introduced to theorems but I don't remember any of them.
  • Biology- I remember learning about parts of the flower and how pollination works.  I remember there is a stem but that's about it. We dissect a grasshopper and mine was hollow.  The smart kids got to dissect a baby pig.
  • Gym class- I never again got on a dolly and slid across the floor, or wacked a little yellow ball. I've never played field hockey, basketball  or softball again.
  • Algebra- it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I realized 2x+y=z means two movie tickets and one bag of popcorn is how much movie you need to go the movies.
  • English- I did one literal analysis in my freshmen year in college but that was it.  I did read the Great Gatsby again because I thought it was a fantastic book in high school  As an older women, it seems do damn shallow to me.
  • Music- I took HAM (History of Art and Music).  I remember listening to the intro to Pictures at an Exhibition and the intro the The Great March in to Kiev. But I can no longer remember which piece is which.
  • Geography- Whatever happened to Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Rwanda, Burma, the USSR and all of those other countries that have disappeared from all of the textbooks.  Fortunes, I still have my 40 year old globe so I can still look them up.
  • Government- I was taught that we had a constitution but I didn't bother to try to understand it. Nor did I fully understand the three branches of government.
  • Typing- I can still type but spend and accuracy are not strong points.
