Oak Creek brewery- AZ

 Oak Creek Brewery

SEDONA, AZ

This place seems more interested in the food rather than the beer so that's always a disappointment for me. I wanted to get a flight but 7 beers of 5 oz pours was the only option and that is just too much beer for me to consume and drive. So I got the two seasonal beers.  I don't know what they were names as they are listed nowhere on the menu, the draft board or the website (which indicates that the beers aren't really important to them).

One beer was a vanilla, mango IPA and it was too sweet for my taste.  The other was a coffee IPA and it was smooth and full of taste.

This was the only brewery in Sedona but I wouldn't go back here.

Appalachian Brewery

 Appalachian Brewery Company

PA

I waited and waited and waited for this brewery to open in my neighborhood and it opened last week.  I've had their beer before and liked it.  So i was so exited to welcome them to the hood.

Of course, things were still disorganized so it was hard to be a beer list.  There was an electronic board that kept rotating and I had a hard time focusing on what was on tap.

They are a bit controlling on flight choices.  They wanted to give me a flight filled with lighter beers. So I became a crybaby and they let me put my own flight together.

I had 2 IPAs, 2 Pale Ales and 2 stouts. Nothing jumped at as spectacular.

Stable 12 Brewery

 Stable 12 Brewery

Phoenixville, PA

The food was delicious. The beers were mediocre, at best.  As a matter of fact, all three of us left without finishing our beers. I am not going back.

Washing My Hands

Washing My Hands

Tanzania

February 2016

I was grateful to find a place in Tanzania to wash my hands. This was a rare find.

Root Down Brewery

 Root Down Brewery Company

Phoenixville, PA

I loved this place. It's got a nice atmosphere.  It's roomy so you can bring a crowd.  The wait staff were all very accommodating and friendly and the beers were delicious.

I asked for a flight of IPAs.  That was 4 tastes of 5 oz pours.  The bartender suggested I get two flights and try all 8 IPAs.  But I was driving.  So I will just have to go back.

The DIPA was delicious and I did get a second sample of this one and I wish I had gotten a growler as well.

Notes from my high school students

Notes From My High School Students
2011

I just joined Facebook and so I now have the opportunity to connect with students who were in high school 20- 25+ years ago.  It's been great fun to hear from them. I spent most of my career as a high school administrator.  I probably had 10,000 students slip in and out of my schools during my 30 year career.

"theres very few people that made such an impact that

after 22 years i can remember the names of teachers and

v principles who made a true possitive impression and

you bridget or as i knew you dr kelly are top on the list ."

"Goodness, Dr. Kelly! How absolutely stunning to "see" you again! You've long been one of the people I wanted to be able to thank - so, thank you for being such a positive influence in my young life. I owe much of my philosophy as an educator to you and the example you set by both holding us to high standards & expecting the best from us *and* being compassionate and genuinely concerned for us. I'm so glad to see life treating you well, and very happy to be in touch with you!"

"Dr. Kelly! Awesome friend request to get. Glad you remembered me after all these yrs

"Oh my gosh! Dr. Kelly! One of my administrative inspirations. 16 years after graduation and I'm attempting to move from teaching to admin myself.   I always remember how you would stand at the doors and greet us by name. Or sign every single report card with a personal message. Just want you to know it meant something....to all of us!
I hope all is well."

Bridget E Kelly You are one of those women. Thank you for all you do not only here in the US but around the world. You are an amazing example.

The Shaman

The Shaman
Somewhere in the Jungles of Panama
Christmas Day- 2004

He guided us through the forest and pointed at various plants.  Our translator told us what each of these plants could cure. We were assured that the shaman could cure every disease from plants in this jungle.  So, when I noticed the scar on the shaman's stomach, I asked about it.

"No, no, cancer. Hospital."

Monk

Young Monk
Bhutan
December 2017

I don't think this boy was older than 7 but he had already made a lifetime commitment to become a monk.  So he is isolated from his family and he lives in a monastery with many other young boys and he studies all day long. These boys don't enter this life because of any deep seated religious belief.  Rather, they enter out of necessity. Once they are in this community, they are assured a roof over their head and food every day.  The community is obligated to feed these monks and they do even if it means they do not eat enough that day.

Color Run IPA

 Color Run

Triple IPA
LeVante Brewery
West Chester, PA

Yes, I liked this even though I don't particularly like a triple IPA.  I don't like the strong alcohol taste in my beer. And I don't like a lot of alcohol in my drinks. I don't like to get drunk. But this beer is smooth, dangerous but smooth.

The Book

The Book

Here are some books that stand out in my mind as great books:

Some of the books I read in the last six months:
Breaking Wild  - Diane Les Becquet- I listened to this book on the way up and back on a long road trip.

Dan Rather: Stories of a Lifetime- this book reminded me of my dad.  I listened to this book and as rather talked about some very emotional moments in his life, his voice quivered with emotion.  My dad would do that as well.

The M Train- Patti Smith- she writes autobiographies and then reads them as audiobooks.  And she has the perfect stretchy voice to tell her scratchy life story.

Thicker than Water- Tyler Shultz- I knew of this company but I did not know of its corruption.

The Opposite of Loneliness- Marina Keegan- this young woman was an outstanding writer.  What a shame to think that all of her potential is gone because of a car accident.

Bream Gives Me  Hiccups   - Jesse Eisenberg- this book is hiliroius.  The author rates restaurants on a scale of 1 to 2000.

The Absolute Bright -    James Lescesne

How to Be An Antiracist- Ibram Kendi- I read this book after Goerge Floyd was murdered.  And the book is intense.  Every system we have is filled with opportunity to keep black people down.

The Pale-Faced Lie- David Crow- some families are really fucked up and this story is about one of those fucked up families.

Finding China- Mitch Album.  This man wrote Tuesdays with Morrie and the concept is the same.  It's a story about lessons learned as a young girl slipped away from cancer.
The book that changed my life
  • Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Hugo- I read this book when I was 15.  I had not heard of the Holocaust nor knew of the atrocities of mankind.  So this book awaked me.
  • The Tipping Point
  • From Good to Great
  • Travels of My Tee Shirt in a Global Market- we are more interconnected than I had thought.
  • In A Sunburnt Country- Leopoled- I loved how he made his most simple life so interesting.  Every time I prune a bush I think of his comments about what to prune and every day decisions of life.
The book I wish I’d written
Seymore, An Introduction- JD Salinger- I have read this book about 20 times
A Walk in The Woods-  I have listened or read this book about 10 times

The last book that made me cry
I remember Love Story as a sad story.  But I was 17 at the time and I thought this was a remarkable book.

Poisonwood Bible was a tough read.  The book was filled with one sad story after another. i didn't cry but it definitely left me with grief for the family.

The books that made me laugh
  • A Walk in the Woods- I read this book once but I have listened to it on audio so many, many times.  I have listened to this story so much that I can just pop any of the discs in my car's audio system and I can pick up the story.  And I still laugh every time I hear it.

  • David Sedaris' Macy Elf story- OMG, this story is a riot.

  • by F. Scott Fitsgerald.  I never thought he was a humorous writer but this book is so damn funny.  I laughed out loud when  read the book.  And then I lent the book to my father and he laughed out loud.  And my dad had a friend visiting our house and he gave the book to his friend because it was so damn funny.  And as my dad passed the book off to his friend, he looked at me and said, "I guess I should have asked you if it was OK to give your book away but it was so funny."  I loved this moment with my dad.

  • I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas by Lewis Black.  This story of how Lewis, a Jew, celebrates Christmas is is damn funny.  I like to listen to this story on audio stream because Black's inflections and tone just add to his sarcasm.
The book I’m most ashamed not to have read
I have tried reading Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness so many damn times.  I think I have purchased 10 copies of the book and I have not gotten passed the first three pages of this book.  It haunts me that I have not read it.

I haven't read A Hand Maid's Tale and I just think I should.  There is so much reference  to this book now with all of our ugly, mysgosist government.

The book I give as a gift
  • I used to give and receive the book Our Bodies, Ourselves.  This was a 1970's radical Feminist book and it pushed all the boundaries at that time.
  • Now, I try to give away every book I read so that I can get rid of my book collection.  I have carried round too many books that are read once and stay on my shelf for years.  I have to pass them on to someone else.
Best Audiobooks- I love to listen to a great story and these books were great stories
  • Blue Lagoon
  • Blue Highways
  • A Walk In The Woods
  • The Poisonwood Bible
  • Cutting For Stone

My earliest reading memory
  • Nancy Drew books- I was a poor reader as a child but I know I read some of these books.
  • Romona- Beverly Cleever
  • Across Five Aprils
  • Red Sky In Morning
My comfort read
  • Japanese novels from the 1950's
  • Raise High The Roof Beam Carpenter by JD Salinger.  I've read this book 20 times.
  • Franny and Zooey by J D Salinger.  I haven't read this book as much but I still love it.
  • The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I've read the book twice.  I have listened to the audio production three times and I have watched the movie twice.  I have read every book Amy Tan has published.

The books that had the greatest influence on my writing
  • The Elements of Style- After 50 years, I still refer to this book if I have a question on grammer or style.
  • Micky Rooney's books- He just told the story.

Pale Ale with Mango and Ginger

                                                                    Pale Ale

with Mango and Ginger
Boxcar Brewery
West Chester, PA

Typically, I do not like a beer with lots of fruity taste.  If I want to drink something that tastes like a Snapple, I'll drink a Snapple.  But this beer is an exception. I think the ginger taste neutralizes the sweet taste of the mango and this beverage still tastes like a beer.

Porter Time

 Winter Time/ Porter Time

                                        November - March

                                        Each and Every Year

It's the most wonderful time of the year.  In the winter, the porters and the stouts and the winter ales show up and I greet them with great enthusiasm each and every year.

My favorites:
  • Vanilla Porter
  • Coffee Porter
  • Imperial Russian Stouts

Twisted Pine Brewery

Twisted Pine Brewery
Boulder, CO
July 2018

I recently went to Boulder for a quick visit and my friend made me a offer I couldn't refuse.  he said I could go to any and all breweries I want to visit in Boulder for one day and he would be the designated driver.  My friend is great.

I went to 3 breweries in the afternoon and finished here.  The flight included 5 pours of 5 ozs for $8.  But somehow I was given a 6th pour because I got confused about what was on tap.

I loved them all. And this is a pleasant place to drink some beers.

Peddler Brewing Company

Peddler Brewing Company
Seattle, Washington
September 2017

This is a great place to bring the whole damn family.  It is kid friendly and has an outdoor space that allows them to play while you enjoy your wonderful beers.  Twelve beers are on tap and they have a nice variety. I had the milk stout on Nitro which was delicious. I also had the Haze Session IPA and the Fresh Hop IPA and they were also very good. I don't know why I didn't try the Coffee Saison or the Tangerine Hefeweizen.  I will have to go back.
