I don't think this boy was older than 7 but he had already made a lifetime commitment to become a monk.  So he is isolated from his family and he lives in a monastery with many other young boys and he studies all day long. These boys don't enter this life because of any deep seated religious belief.  Rather, they enter out of necessity. Once they are in this community, they are assured a roof over their head and food every day.  The community is obligated to feed these monks and they do even if it means they do not eat enough that day.
