On The Ice

On The Ice
Alone
Hudson Bay
Churchill, Canada
November 2018

The unseasonal cold front froze the bay two weeks earlier than usual. Hence, all of the polar bears I have come to see around Churchill are long gone.  They are miles away on this new ice, looking for lots of seals. A helicopter driver takes us up to search for the few, last stranglers who waited to leave the land.  About ten miles from the shore, we spot this loner.  He will spend the winter by himself, wandering around, looking for cracks in the ice and in hopes of finding enough food to sustain him for this long, harsh winter.  It is -39F today.
