Jesus Christ, Superstar

Jesus Christ, Superstar
The Broadway Musical
1970

I never saw the play but I had the album and loved, loved, loved  just about every song on it. I thought the music was bold and cagey and made the story of Jesus' trial seem more real to me. And I would play it repeatedly on the one family turn table we had in the den.  That meant everyone had to listen to it.

However, my opportunity to play this particular song was short lived as my father found it be be blasphemy and forbade the playing of this "vulgar" song.  I suggested he listen with context in mind.  But that suggestion did not go over well. And this song was banned from our household (or at least while my dad was at work.)

Every time I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand.
You'd have managed better if you'd had it planned.
Why'd you choose such a backward time in such a strange land?
If you'd come today you could have reached a whole nation.
Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication.
Don't you get me wrong.
I only want to know.

CHOIR

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you're what they say you are?

VOICE OF JUDAS

Tell me what you think about your friends at the top.
Who'd you think besides yourself's the pick of the crop?
Buddha, was he where it's at? Is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain, or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake, or
Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?
Don't you get me wrong.
I only want to know.

CHOIR

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you're what they say you are?
