The surroundings of this brewery are in the midst of a major construction project.  So it was an effort to find thise place and get there.  Maybe it will be better in a few months but it is tough now. 

The brewery is minimalist in decor and limited in beer choices (5).  They sell beer in the pint size and 5 oz size, no flights per se. Buy what you want. My three beers were tasty: Green Monster (IPA), Omar (Pale Ale) and Missed Connections (Red Ale).  I liked all of them and would recommend all three of them.

The pub draws a nice "after work" crowd.

While the brewery setting is fun and upscale, the beers are nondescript. I tried four beers of the eight beer choices and nothing jumped out at me.  The porter was good but not great.  The IPA wasn't interesting. I had a wheat ale and it was too tart. And the Rye IPA tasted like a Yeungling Lager. I wanted to try two other beers but they were temporarily out of those two choices (which I think is sloppy management.  A tasting room should keep all of its beer up and available).

This might be a fun place to stop by for a Friday afternoon happy hour.  But i wouldn't recommend it to a beer kook.

 This is a sweet, little place, tucked away in a strip mall area. It's small and friendly and the beers are delicious.  The bartender likes to talk beer talk which I like. I didn't try any of the food because the beer was too good.  Give it a try.

In pursuit of local breweries

March 10-12, 2021

Motive: pursuing my goal of a brewery visit in every state.  I needed to visit ones in RI and CT.

Stayed at the Newport Hotel right along the cliff walk.  My room had two bedrooms and I only paid $79/night.  I should have brought guests with me.

I had a very expensive lobster roll and a few cups of various chowders.

My front windshield got damaged by a rock on the way up so I had to spend too much time, on Thursday, getting it fixed. The rock hit me so hard that I am just lucky that the window didn't shatter.

The hotel had a lovely hot tub which I had all to myself.

I went in search of the Breaker Mansion which was much larger than I imagines.  When I was in RI in 1973, my dad and I went in search of this place but couldn't get near it because the filming of the Great Gatsby was still going on.

The weather was beautiful but windy. So it wasn't really beach lounging weather.

Newport is one big, quaint outdoor shopping mall.

Coddington Brewery- RI- I did not like this place one bit.  I could hardly wait to finish my medicare beers and get out of there.

Newport Craft Brewery- RI- this place had good beers and i bought one of their beer glasses because "pour judgment" is printed on it.  And I loved this play on words.

Stony Creek Brewey- CT- I liked the beers, the food and the service.

I stopped in Mystic, CT and just like Newport, it is just one high end retail store after another.

The beers were good here but I didn't like the vibes of the place.  The beers are listed on a huge board but there is no description of the beers.  You have to go to the website to get that info.  You have to stand in line and give a waiter your list and then retrieve your beers at the end of the bar.  The waiters are hurried so there is very little interaction with them.  I left unsatisfied.

It was the day before my birthday.  There were several people in my tour group.  But only one other person wanted to take part in this ceremony.  Because my birthday was the next day, I thought I had no other choice but to partake in this cleansing ceremony.  I wanted to be beautiful on my birthday.

Regretfully, Michelle Fuller lost her difficult battle with lung cancer today.  She was diagnosed almost two years ago but was able to work right up to the last month.  Michelle was a Physician Assistant in Florida.  Of course, Vanessa had been in constant contact with Michelle right up to the end and she was just a great friend.

At this time, no funeral arrangements have been shared with us but I will let you know when we hear anything. 

As you may recall, when Michelle Meehan died, we collected funds and gave a $500 award to a junior at MMA.  We made the presentation at our 45th reunion.  Afterwards, Michelle Fuller chastised me for only including Michelle in this memorial award.  She thought we should have honored all of our classmates who have died. And she volunteered to raise funds again for our 50th reunion with this thought in mind.  Does this idea appeal to any of you and, if so, would any of you like to organize this award? Let me know.

I will always remember Michelle as a strong-willed, passionate person who spoke her mind and was comfortable in her own skin. I am so sorry that her death was so difficult.  I am sure that the isolation of covid just compounded her challenges. But I am comforted in knowing that she is no longer in pain.  And so  I hope the rest of you are well and managing these challenging times.

MPR: So very sorry to hear of the passing of Michele, our friend and MMA sister.  I am very grateful I was able to spend the weekend of our 45th reunion with her 3 years ago. She was always so much fun.  May she Rest In Peace, she is now an Angel who will continue to be with us - we will hold her in our hearts.  Love to you all. Please count me in to help in any way. 

JJG: I am so sorry to hear the news about Michelle.  Knew it was coming but still found it hard to believe.  I will always remember her as a vibrant and fun loving person.  One big consolation is that she is no longer in pain.  Michelle will be truly missed.  May she Rest In Peace. Please let me know if you need additional assistance.

ROK: Bridget, thanks for sharing this news with us. I did hear that she was not well but it is hard to believe that she was taken from us at such a young age.  Michelle was so full of life and always had a smile on her face. She brought many people joy with that smile. I will be more than happy to help organize a donation in her name and for all of those that have passed in our class.

MMC: Thank you Vanessa and Bridget for bringing us this sad news. Life is so very short. We were all lucky to have known Michele and have been touched by her incredible spirit. The world is a bit dimmer today. I pray that we will all be together again someday free from disease and pain. 

CDG   I am so sad to hear about Michelle. I really regret not being able to make any of the recent reunions. I am so sorry that I wasn’t able to reconnect with her after high school.  Thank you for sharing this sad news. Love to you all.

RR: The last time I saw her — last October — she was so frail and unsteady on her feet.   She told me that the rounds of chemo she had endured had no effect and that she was going to try an experimental treatment next . . . A few days after our lunch together on Rittenhouse Square.   She said ‘I’ll never be cured but at least, if this experimental treatment works, I could live another two or three years’ . . . She so wanted that . . . She and Vanessa were all booked to take a trip to Greece in June — now — and she was so looking forward to that . . . To mark the 50th anniversary of their first trip there together when we were Sophmores in high school.

She was smart as twenty people all put together . . . Smart, wise and a very astute observer of human behaviors . . . I never had to finish a sentence for her because she understood everything from the second word and finished my sentences for me . . . I will miss that wisdom and that level of brilliance.   I am so sorry for us that we lost her above all because she was so unique, such a bright light.   People such as she don’t happen often in life and I hope we’ll all be together again one day in Paradise.Many good wishes and lots of big love to you all.

KFB  This breaks my heart. I was holding out hope that she would recover. It was wonderful to reconnect with her these recent years. So glad she made it to Florida. MDC: Bridget,  I am so sad to hear of Michelle's passing.  I have a niece in ICU health care and she has told me of how sad for the patient, family and friends during COVID.  I can not take on the fund raising right now, but would be happy to see this done for out 50th reunion year.  I will be thinking of everyone and what we have gone thru this year.  Hoping things get better soon.

1955- Unchained Melody- Al Hibbler-  I thought the Righteous Brothers wrote this song.  But I was wrong.  This song is a favorite and one that I hum or sing obsessively.

1956- Que Sera Sera (What Will Be Will Be)- Doris Day-  everyone sang this song for years.

1957- Kisses Sweeter Than Wine- Jimmie Rodgers

1958- Mack The Knife- Bobby Darin

1959- I Only Have Eyes For You- The Flamingos- I know Art Garfunkel's version of this song and this version is just as enjoyable

1960- A Summer Place Theme Song- Percy Faith- I didn't see the movie but I listened to this song for years.  It may be the first instrumental that captured my attention.

1961- Traveling Man- Rick Nelson- My sister used to sing me this song every night as we laid in bed.  She would sing it until my mother yelled up to us from the living room to go to sleep.

1962- Monster Mash- Bobby Pickett and the Crypt Kickers

1963- Dominque- The Singing Nun

1964- On Broadway- The Drifters

1965- This Diamond Ring- Gary Lewis and the Playboys

1966- Bus Stop- The Hollies

1967- Summer Rain- Johnny Rivers

1968- Young Girl- Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

1969- In The Year 2525- Zager and Evans- I thought this song was so cerebral, so sophisticated.

1970- Lay Down (Canfles in the Rain)- Melanie

1971- Maggie May- Rod Stewart- this song still brings me great joy every time I hear it. It came out in the fall, just as we were all returning to school.

1972- The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face- Roberta Flack

1973- You're So Vain- Carly Simon

1974- Car On The Hill- Joni Mitchell- I wore out this entire Court and Sparks album but this was my favorite on the album.

1975- Loving You- Minnie Ripperton- this woman has an incredible voice and range.  This song was a smash hit and then she died of breast cancer shortly thereafter.  I don't think she had any more hits.

1976- Don't Go Breaking My Heart- Elton John and Kiki Dee- elton John really knows how to sing a duet.  He has some great songs.

1977- Night Moves- Bob Segar- This was my favorite college bar song.  I particularly remember dancing to this song in the Brewery in State College, PA.  It just couldn't be played loud enough. And every time I hear this song, I long to go back to being 21 years old.

1978- You Needed Me- Anne Murray

1979- What A Fool Believes- Doobie Brothers- this was a summer song for me.  I was out of college, in a dead end job and mostly dissatisfied with my life.  But during the summers, I retreated to the beach for the weekend and that seemed to heal everything.  

1980- We Don't Talk Anymore- Jimmy Cliff- 

1981- Under Pressure- David Bowie

1982- Always on My Mind- Willie Nelson

1983- I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues- Elton John- There are lots of his songs that I really like. He seemed to have a long period of time where he just released one enjoyable hit after another.  It's easy to sing along with his songs which may be why I like him so much.

1984- What's Love Got To Do With It- Tina Turner- I think this song became an anthem song for women in lousy relationships.

1987- I've Had The Time Of My Life- Bill Medley- I loved the movie and the song.  Now, I don't care about the movie so much but I still love to listen to this song.

1988- Fast Car- Tracey Chapman- this song hit the public by storm. It's understated but she sings of everyone's moment when you just know you have to escape your life at all cost.  You just have to get the hell out of town and start over and dream bigger.

1989- Love Shack- The B-52's- this is a great, crazy ass song that needs to be played at full volume and you have to get up and move with exaggerated, spastic movement.

1990- We Didn't Start the Fire- Billy Joel-  I have listened to this song hundreds of times and every time I hear it, I hear a new line.

1991- Two Grey Rooms- Joni Mitchell- I am a huge JM fan.  I have a recording of everything she has released. And she has released some masterpieces and she has released some duds.  This is a masterpiece of a song.  She sings of the longing and obsession of a fantasy.

1992- Constant Craving- KD Lang- this was the first time I started listening to KD.  This whole album was spectacular

1995- The Last Chance Texaco- Rickie Lee Jones

1996- Ironic- Alanna Morrisette
