 Movies 2024

I love to go to the movies.

  1. The Boys in the Boat- what determination.
  2. Ruskin- I never heard of him until this year and he lived in my current neighborg=hood.
  3. American Fiction- this was a well written story of negative stereotypes.
  4. Fantastic Beast- I forget which one I saw.  There are  three of these movies and I will watch any one of them whenever I can. I love the magic.
  5. The Color Purple- original
  6. Origin- What a profound movie. Now I want to read the book.

  10. Still Alice- my friend was just diagnosed with dementia.
  11. Cabrini- She is an inspiration.
  12. Nalavyn- the story of the Russian who challenged Putin. Of course, he was killed.

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice
December 21

In 2014, I went to a country church service to acknowledge this moment: the shortest day of the year, the longest night of the year.  We were honoring the homeless who had to spend the night in the cold, this longest night of the year.  I was so moved by the moment that I only now look at this moment with dread and sadness for all these who have to sleep outside on this cold winter night.

Nose bleeds

Nose Bleeds
Fall, 2024

I never had a nose bleed, my whole life. But one day, I just bled and bled and bled. I couldn't believe it. And then it stopped so I went on my way.  That was a Sunday.

Then on Wednesday, I was out driving and my nose started to bleed again. I pulled over and tried to stop it and it seemed to slow down a bit so I drove on. But then I had to pull over again because I just had blood everywhere: on the steering wheel, on my blouse, on my dash board. and I couldn't stop the bleeding. I drove to Urgent Care but it was closed for the day.  I called my friend who is a nurse and asked her if it was too extreme to go the emergency room for a silly nose bleed. She told me to go.  But I was just bleeding too much to drive so I sat there and pieced my nose until it stopped.

I sent a message to my NP, asking her if there was something I should or could do to prevent these bleeds.  She didn't respond for a few days and told me that were probably allergy related and just get some nose stray.

Three days later, I had three nose bleeds in one evening. I called an ENT and made an appointment for the next week.

Then I went to visit my niece and her  family and had two wild nose bleeds on a Sunday morning.  She wanted me to go to the hospital and I just wanted to get home. So I took off as soon as the bleed stopped. And when I got home, I felt that this was the end of the nose bleeds.  I thought now that I have this doctor's appointment, it wouldn't happen again. But I had a bleed that night.

The next day, the doctor looked up my nose and told me that I had a big cut up my nose.  He just came over to me and sprayed inside my nose, stuck a hot rod up there and cauterized the cut. It was over in a few seconds but the procedure unversed me. And my nose is no longer bleeding.

Taking the Pigs to the Slaughter House

Taking The Pigs to Slaughter
Rwanda
October 2024
We were in our jeep as we passed them on the road. Our driver slowed down and asked, "Where are you going, brother, with those pigs?"

The man shouted back, "We are taking them to the slaughter house." And then he gave us a thumbs up gesture.  He seemed so damn happy. Money was coming his way. And these pigs just followed along with them, unaware of their pending doom.  I felt a little sorry for them.

They stand around and wait all day, mostly for tourist.  You pay them about $1 and they follow you through the market and carry your purchase. I don't know how long that stay with you. But they were eager to work.

We can't skype. Bill Lowenburg said we could try videoconferencing through Google Hangouts. You would need to have a laptop or computer with Chrome on it and he could help make it happen.
