I just can not believe how some people earn a living.  This woman sits all day long in this same spot, seven days a week.  At the end of the day, she bundles up her blanket and takes her unsold merchandise home with her.  And then she returns to the same spot the next day. If she doesn't work and sell something, she makes no money for the day.

I recently returned from China where I was teaching global leadership skills to college women.  I loved this assignment.  My students were hungry to suck up any and all information they could find. 

So today, I opened this email from one of my students.I am a sucker for a note like this one.  When I was in China, it was so hard to get good news coverage.  Actually, it was hard to get any news.  I had access to China Daily which focused to giving Americans a Chinese view of our corrupt USA world.  So my  students frequently relied on just what the government feed them.  They never questioned anything they were told. Some of them would become indignant when I suggested they looked to other sources for the news. They told me they had to trust the government and they thought I had to be less jaded in my views. 

What is the balance between our two worlds?

I watched a TED talk "The Danger of One Story" which talks about how people make generalization based on only on story. It reminds me of you. You always get news from various sources, like BBC news.

In the winter of 2012, I taught global leadership skills to college women in China.  It was a lovely gig.  And when I returned, my students wrote to me on a regular basis.  I continue to be amazed at how genuine and thoughtful they are to me.

 

 

 

In the passing weekend, the 8th Women's Symposium was held, a lot things going on, so much fun. During the Honoring Mothers' Tea, I was crying because I was thinking about all the facilitators I had. You are the treasure of my life. Will you come back for next Symposium? We all miss you so much.

Good to hear from you, I tried to apply for the master's in America in my third year, but my parents don't want me to go to America to study, they are very conservative and thought my stay out abroad for two years is a real torure to them. So I took the post-graduate entrance examination of ZHENG ZHOU university and I passed it. That university is not far from SIAS. 

 How are you been doing

Alan offered me a chance to work in Guam university in January, but that time my score of my master's didn't come out, so I rejected that. In ZZ university their are many chances to go to America universities to be the exchange students. Hope I can see you one or two years later? Are you still travel around like wind?I miss you my dear friend.

Most World Academy girls went to SHANGHAI to do their interns because one of the facilitators called Andrea offered them accommodation there. June 1st will be anniversary of founding 15 years of SIAS and also our graduation ceremony,  celebration     that day will be amazing, hope you can come.

In the spring fo 2012, I taught global leadership skills to a group of college women. In a few weeks, the last of my Chinese students will graduate and I will no longer know anyone at SIAS University.  That makes me a little sentimental.  So I wrote to several of them last night to tell them I was thinking of them.  here is Gloria's immediate response:

 

 

Hah! you! I miss hearing from you.  Well, you never told me what you are doing.  

Last month, I got an offer from Strathclyde, a British University. I applied it because it has wonderful marketing program and doesn't require an application fee. but I decided not to study abroad for now. It is too expensive, so I think I'd better start to save money first.

 

I took the job offer this week at Le Meridien Zhengzhou, near SIAS. Assistant Manager of Stewarding. Salary is 2800rmb with food and accommodation covered. I actually like job offers in shanghai more for I think there are more possibilities. However I'm convinced Le Meridien might be a good start.  I will learn new things in this position.

A few months back, I taught leadership skills to college women  in China.  As part of the program, they were required to engage in a community service project. Because there are so few social services in China, the concept of volunteering  is foreign to them.  They are very generous in helping their neighbors as needed.  But a sustained project of volunteering is a new concept.  

This specific project was started by another student almost two years ago.  It seems to be a project that moves many of the young women to tears.  

Here is Jane's take on her experience in volunteering at a school for children with intellectual difficulties.

 

Dear Jerrie:

Hi,jerrie.my name is jane. I'm a new member in women academy.I 'm a freshmen.I 'm honored to into the academy. And the two month I get lots of knowledge. Also I learn how to send a email to others. Now I can do .Thank you very much. And I have two things share with you .

These days I didn't have a good mood.I  am very anxious. I＇m not a good daughter.I don＇t have a good grades in study. I don't become a phoenix in parents's heart . I 'm only a sparrow. I don't have admitted to a key school. Somepeople said:" In China, the three graduation means unemployment." Now,I'm very sad.

But yesday I'm very moved. I went to a special education school in xinzheng.They
cannot speak, hear, have a plenty of mentally retarded children, but they are good naive, good romance. WhenI walked into the school, I also afraid that they might not like me.A lot of kids were coming, they jumpped on us embrace we jump, sister sister shouted, with a happy smile.

This was my first time here, for the first time to see the children, we didn't know each other, but
they were happy with this sister danced by the elder brother ah, they one by one, and
I would strike (though I didn't understand what's that supposed to mean).

Then we one-to-one responsible for each child (12) deaf children,I took a boy, his
name is Wang Qingyu ,a 11 years old , he cannot speak nor hear, I communicated with him by wrote. The boy is very clever and cute. Although they have a disabled body, but their heart is very beautiful.

I am doing my HR internship in Beijing BISS International School right now, will finish it and back to school of my graduation in May, couldn't wait!!!
 

Since I couldn't get my USA visa, I got a new door open. I will start my career in Beijing City International School at HR office after graduation. Since I have a HR intern experience in International school, I want to explore more in this road, I believe this get me a new way to do somethingdifferent in the future. 

Another excited thing is that I got a boyfriend from March this year, he was a men member in World Academy, he will graduate in May as well, we will comem to Beijing and building our home together!!!

How is everything? Have you plan back to China? I can show you the Great Wall in Beijing.

In the spring of 2012, I taught global leadership skills to college women in a real community.  They were wonderful women who wanted to take on the world.  During the last semester of their senior year, they go out on an internship.

Susanna just wrote to us to tell us about a great internship she scored in Shanghai.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for her and yet another example of all the good that comes out of being affiliated with The World Academy for the Future of Women.  I am proud of her.

 

 

 

 Here is what she wrote:

 

 

I’ve been here for four days from Monday.

For the first week, I’ll just get everything familiar.

As I know on the paper I signed, I will do like:

o   Draft meeting summaries and reports on AmCham Shanghai Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) events

o   Provide logistical support on CSR programs, meetings, and activities

o   Research on US-China trade, economic, commerce and business issues

o   Edit and proof written materials such as reports, articles and briefing documents

o   Support and update AmCham Shanghai CSR website and database

 

What I did so far are like summarizing a Chinese website with their projects in English, reviewing a NGO’s certificates and some materials so that they can be approved to be public on AmCham’s website.

My office and my boss are so supportive, I got used to the leadership style I learned in WAFW, and I feel quite right with my boss’ style. He worked for American government for a long time and value staffs’ integrity. That’s what I value a lot and that’s the leadership I would like to follow. Oh he is Chinese but speak a little bit Chinese.

I also wanna share something outside of work. I feel so warm and so energized because of Andrea. She care of me like her daughter. One morning I was ready to leave with my prepared lunch and Andrea got up from her jet lag sleep and brought me a big bag said this is for your lunch! I’ll remember all these fragrant moments.

This morning, I was thinking about this city. I saw everyone on the subway never smile because it’s way crowded and take long time to go to work. I heard from everyone say it’s really hard to find a job for graduates. How lucky I am and how happy I am that I’m living in this international metropolis, I’m having this great opportunity to be an intern in AmCham, I’m confident about what I’m doing right now and what I’m going to do in the future. I wanna give everyone a big smile to encourage them treasure every single moment you have right now to do what you want, sad and negative will never lead you to a better self. What I’ve been doing? Join the World Academy for the Future of Women and do as much as you can, fully express. Sounds like an advertisement but from my heart.

Thank WAFW and all people have guided me, you influenced me and I will influence others, and the world.

I just heard from Emily, a former student from China.  I worry about Emily.  She is a great worker with lots of potential but she is without a local mentor, someone to push her.  She still keeps in touch with those of us who worked with her in the WAFW.  But she has very limited access to us.  She doesn't come from a family that will push and promote her.  They would be content to let her marry a local farmer. So she is on her own to find her own way.

,I am sorry to reply to you so late , i feel very happy that you tell me your life time , i was missing the time we spend in our campus, Now i have already worked about one and a half years ,  i had no much time to come back to SIAS though I miss it very much .  I am working on planing and trainning in Foxconn , but i didn't want to stay there all my life , the position is not good for my future life and my career so i decided to change another one when i stay here two years i determined to go to Shanghai to start a new job. 

     I tell Jerrie about that she said that i should worked what i really want  to do ,in my present work i can not use English as you know i like English very much if i am not always use it i will lose it , i can not imagine it ,so after i stay in Foxconn for two years i will try to find another job ,  I do not know how it going on but i just want to try and change it .

 I am appreciate about your words you said to me :Emily can do everything!

During the spring of 2012, I taught leadership skills to college women in china.  I loved, loved, loved their company.  They were so grateful for my time and so eager to learn.  We would sit for hours every day and just talk.  And when I left China, I really missed them.  And they missed me.  And so they wrote to me all of the time.  Here is Carina's letter about her summer of 2012.

 Hi,Bredget, it’s been a long time; how is your summer vocation? Anything interesting happened? And  I have so many want to tell you about my summer vacation.

I am going to be a junior officially in September. This summer vocation I have two jobs. One is an assistant for an English summer camp, I love this job, before this, many people told me that being an assistant in a summer camp was hard and meaningless, it’s all about taking care of children. And before this job, I really just treated it as a job, I thought it’s just seven days and I would not have some feeling about it. But I was wrong. I have to say it is kind of hard, you know the children is energetic and naughty, they keep challenging our patience. But children are always children; you can’t blame them for their energy and naughty. They are pretty, frank and innocent. They made us laugh; they cared for us and comforted us when we were unhappy. Besides, during these days, all the students and teachers lived together, we were like a big family, we ate, slept, study, danced and had fun every day. I like working in team. It’s much more fun than working alone.

 During the seven days, I have learned my first complete dance and done a lot of funny things. We also played some games. Like we put a empty bottle on the ground near the dustbin and waited to see how many people would pass by before the bottle was picked up and thrown into the dustbin, then we shall clap our hands for the people who picked it up. Like we played death, one people in our team went to find a stranger and asked for help, then he take this person to the place we all stayed, when the person were taken there, we all pretended to pass out and see what reactions they would have. It’s very funny. I have some pictures for you, Carrol and Miriam.  I feel so lucky to have this job; I spent a happy week and met some kind, funny people. This experience also makes me understand that you will never know something unless you get involved personally. 

The other job is a translator for our school, but now I quit. Cause it’s not like it’s supposed to be. We were told it’s translation, that’s why so many people wanted to get this job, regardless it’s low payment. We also went through a very difficult test. But the people who get admitted now are doing something has nothing to do with translation. I feel hurt. I give up other opportunities to get this job, all I think is to do something related to my major, my major is business English, I am eager to find some translate jobs. Now I am going to post a resume online and hope that I could get a job to translate during the vacation and in the spare time when I become a junior. 

This is all about my summer vocation .Now I have no job and plan to study for a major test next semester. Do you have something interesting? What is your plan this year?

"Hungry is a big problem, also a small problem. And I want to love this problem completely. In my opinion, we should encourage them to do a job and call for government to support them job opportunity, not just give them food and money. It is a shallow way."

I walked the Great Wall on a cold, gray, windy February day.  There weren't many people out there that day. The wind was blistering and the path is steep so it was very hard to walk.  Every step was laborious. And I couldn't imagine how laborers from centuries ago were able to get around this walkway with any ease.  It was just too damn hard to walk it. After five minutes, I wanted to leave and retreat to some place warm. But I thought I can't come all this way and only spend 5 minutes there.  So I waited half an hour and gleefully left.

Yesterday, we went to German Embassy to taking part in the Christmas Bazaar, please find two pices attached, so crowded and expensive! Hahaha

     I am doing my internship in Shine Academy( a special education school) in Shanghai(I am senior this year!). I am a learning assistant here. there  I have worked here for half of one month and I find that I am happy when I  stay with children. it is the facilitator Andrea in the WAFW that  introduced this internship for me! I am so grateful for her to do it for me.

A Letter From A Former Student

 Dear Friends

 

Hope life is going well.

 

As you might already know, October 1st is China’s National Day. Schools and companies have 7 days off. People travel and visit friend during this break. I went to visit my sister who works in Zhejiang Province as I knew I would not need to walk that much visiting my sister, it is better than just stay at home for 7 days.

 

My sister and her husband has been working at a small town called “Fanshi” for 6 years as Migrant workers leaving 3 children at home with her husband’s parents. Fanshi is a town with hundreds of manufacturing factories, which attracts thousands of young migrant workers from Henan Province. The shrimp factory I worked for two summers is located in this town as well.

 

To support the family and their children at home, my sister and brother-in-law work for 4 hours at night from 12 am to 4 am. And then my sister would get up at 6 am to buy materials to make dumplings.  When everything is prepared by about 10 am, she would drive a 3-wheel motorcycle to a place where many vendors gather together and sell food in the front of a large factory that hosts about 8 hundred workers.  (As indicated in the pictures).  After lunch time, my sister goes home to refill dumpling materials and charge the battery of motorcycle.  Then goes back to at 3pm until 9pm after dinner.  During the day, my brother-in-law drives a taxi.

 

I was helping my sister making dumplings during the visit. It sells 1$ a bowl, 13 dumplings each bowl.  If life is good, my sister can sell about 100 bowls a day, if not, sometimes she only sells 3 bowls of dumpling a day.

 

My sister makes 300$ by working at night in the factory per month and about 200-300$ per month by selling dumplings. She sees her children once a year during the Spring Festival.

 

There is one school for migrant worker’s children in this town, I talked to many of the workers who came to eat dumpling, most of them have their children left back at home. I asked the reason why not send them to this migrant worker’s school, they say that there are many requirements to go to that school and they don’t have time to look after the children after school.

 

My brother-in-law has a nephew Jim who is 16, he quit school last year and worked at a construction site for 6 months back at home. He came to this town in February, 2014 and works at a toy factory.  He works 10 hours a day, 28 days a month and gets paid 250$ per month. I knew him since he was little, a very nice boy. I asked him why he quit school at only 8th grade. He said he did not score well at the exams and was acting as a naughty teenager. The teacher always said to him and his other 3 friends, “What is the point of staying in school for you guys if you are not studying well? Why don’t you quit school? If you are staying just for a graduation certificate, I can give you one by the time you should graduate.” So he got very embarrassed and angry and really quit school, along with him, his friends quit also. Working at the same factory with him now.

 

My cousin’s son, 19 years old now, quit school 3 years ago, is now working at the construction site with a pregnant girlfriend Susan at home.

 

Those there are just quite a few among dozens of teenagers who drop out of school.

 

I remember feeling shocked when I heard those two boys with school. I thought high dropping out rate only happened to my generation. With the development of the economic and the increase of people’s income, students and parents would realize the important of continuing education.  I feel heartbroken when I see pregnant Susan walking on the farm, I am worried about Jim’s future when my brother-in-law gets mad at him when Jim cuts off work.

 

Both the teachers in rural areas and parents should realize what they say and behave are making a difference on their children every day. 

 

I feel so lucky and grateful to have a job I like, and a chance to see a bigger world and a dream and passion to do what I can to help more people and children.

 

Life is rich and full of surprises.

In the winter of 2012, I taught leadership skills to college women in China.  As part of the program, they had to participate in a community service project. This volunteerism is a new concept for the Chinese And the feedback that I have received from my students indicate that many of these moments were life changing. I just found this report from one of my students about a project she completed.  I wish I remembered who sent this to me.  

           

 Volunteer visiting for HIV village and possibilities 

About the visits to the AIDS village volunteers on April 21 and 22, it touched me a lot, so I want to share six stories with you about them. 

1,Story about Chi Heng Foundation:

The story took place 15 years ago on a train, a man and his son were sitting opposite Mr. Du Cong, they were silent and thin. After that, he knew they had been diagnosed with AIDS. While the father and son did not know what AIDS was, they knew  the body was getting weak, and the village was n stranger to death. Mr. Du was shocked by this phenomenon, and decided to follow them to the village to see the real situation. He was shocked to see the original villagers here  selling blood to maintain life. At that time, there was no means to check out the bacteria in the blood. In this way, the village has become a famous "AIDS village". The village  also had a popular saying: (stretched it out a curled can earn fifty-I don’t understand what this means). Because of poverty, the villagers sold their blood, selling blood infected AIDS, result in more AIDS victims instead of curing people. Mr. Du was deeply shocked by the situation in the village, determined to do something for these people, and then he returned to Hong Kong to establish  the Chi Heng Foundation. This foundation has developed very well but they need more people to participate together to fight AIDS, to help victims.

1.     Story about the grandmother.

We visited the first place of a grandmother at home, these two pictures illustrate the condition of her home, but worse, the 72-year-old grandmother has to care for her grandson who was diagnosed with AIDS. He is an 18-year-old boy, short and thin, and weak like a 13-year-old child. His parents both passed away due to AIDS. After that he studied in a school run by the Chi Heng Foundation. He had  migrant work when he graduated, but was son dismissed because of AIDS. At home, the only form of entertainment is to see the television with two channels. Besides this, there is  the problem of who will take care of him after his grandma passes away,  and withstanding the pain of torture, tears and anxiety of his grandmother. Add to that the most difficult problem  to rectify this fragile house! We are deeply troubled by this problem, what they can do when it is raining, or ice cold in winter...... Chace decided to give them donations to build the activities of the board. The Office of the Chi Heng Foundation is going to build a warm house for  them. Of course, this is only one example of the thousands of cases, the situation there is even more urgent and poor. Many hands make light work, so we sincerely hope that there are more people to help them.

3,Social Entrepreneur 

This is the story of a student affected by AIDS who, lucky and  grateful, went back to his village with the knowledge    to help other villagers. He is smart enough to do his own projects with start-up funds donated by the Chi Heng Foundation. He got the the villagers to plant peppers, for example. Due to the impact of the disease on these villagers, their bodies are weak, so planting peppers is a good choice. When the peppers are ripe, they use the network marketing to attract the buyers. Currently, the peppers have all been sold this year. He and LaoGanma Company had a further negotiation towards next year's orders. Taking into account that farmers have only four months being busy for planting, and the remaining eight months of nothing to do, it is a pretty scary fact. A classic idea was suddenly born ----- handmade headdress flower. At first, there was one volunteer to teach, and more than 100 villagers who came to learn. He personally went to Guangzhou, Suzhou, to study the market, to sell products, to fight for orders, but because of distance issues, has yet to get the first order. He also took into account his own shop in Zhengzhou with theme marketing, online orders, and so on. As we went to visit, we also wanted to order some goods, to find markets in SIAS as the Woman Academy’s charity project wants to support one of the products. We are looking for help to them and the possibility of cooperation.

4.  Chi Heng Foundation donated the library for the school

 One education-oriented project involved children as the Foundation for the development of building a reading room, buying  books, providing musical instruments and music programs, and other activities. This library is open to all students (including those not affected by AIDS-affected children)  in order to reduce the distance between the children. We hope to work with them: keeping English-language  magazines in the library; donating some Junior English books; and bring to them the idea of a reading project which would bring parents together with children at the school, promote a connections between the two generations, and so on. Hopefully Sias can also establish a WAFW library, our reading seed projects, which has been strongly supported by the school and the Academic Affairs Office, successfully held in the Hall on the third floor, Executive floor, every Saturday. But we want development, while lack of space has been our biggest problem. We hope for children to develop for the future, and look forward to  the new library building with a beautiful House For WAFW Library, designed for children, and opening the doors of wisdom.

5. Environment-friendly bags factory

Another strong woman we met is affected by the disease without succumbing to it. Her husband is living with AIDs, they have three school students at home, but life's struggles doesn’t pull down this wise woman. The Chi Heng help her set up their own small family factory, specializing eco-bags, for businesses in the community, for the Chi Heng Foundation, with the origin of the Academy. Each bag has its own story, each bag has its own unique aspects.  ,Women married to AIDS victims need lots of orders to come,as they have much down time. They need  business and orders. We bought some samples from the factory to show  to businesses and enterprises who can help them. For example, we sent Sias’ LOGO to them , so they could make Sias’ people their own environmental bag and sell them in the Sias gift shop. We gave them WAFW’s LOGO, so they could make WAFW environmental bags to sell in WAFW’s location.; Also, our school will issue a large environmentally friendly bag every Winter Holiday for the students who need to move into their dorms.  Also, making WAFW’s marketing project as a contact, we can get students to make DIY  favorite bags or backpack. To take advantage of Internet marketing, one could put this online. (What kind of mother,  what kind of daughter, a little 13 year old girl have a particular design talent, Mommy bags with the rest of the cloth, she collected into various small skirts, particularly delicate (Chace, and Andrea was in his hand). Her dosen’t constraint from family, the courage to chase your dreams, let us highly inspired and encouraged.I don’t understand this part) Dreams are not afraid of pain, pursuing your dreams always leaves you brimming with a bright smile on a face full of hope. Cheers  for the designers of the future.

6 .Summer camp 

During the conversations I overheard Chi Heng Foundation took the kids to Sias before, and spent a memorable summer camp for one-week. They swam together, played golf together, and Shawn Chen asked them for a hearty meal, they are still thankful now. They hope this year ‘s International Children ' s Day or the summer vacation, they can hold another summer camp in Sias and let children feel the depth of Sias life, let them full fill with hope and a vision for their future. In summer camps,WAFW also can hold a summer camp, as a college student,we can set a good example to them, telling them how beautiful college life is. As we also do Hanzhuang project,so we can invite children in Hanzhuang to participate in the summer camp. Getting children with different backgrounds play together, having a good time, increasing vulnerability to child's communication skills, increasing confidence, reducing injuries, allowing the little children have a new understanding and awareness about AIDS. Also allow them to give each other a card to mark the occasion.
