That First Mother's Day

I was on facebook and saw that one particular student was also on line. He just lost his mom to cancer a few weeks ago and it is the eve of his first Mother's Day without his mom. So I sent him a direct message;
ME: I hope this Mother's Day is bearable for you. I will be thinking of you as you muddle through the day.
HIM: Thank you so much Dr. Kelly. This message arrived just when I needed it. I’ve been looking through photos on my Mom’s iPad. Seeing a little through her eyes of what mattered to her. I was getting very emotional. I mean it’s good but it hurts. So yes lots of muddling through. Just thank you so much
ME: My mom died 22 years ago today. I know how you feel.
HIM: I thought I had a vague understanding of death/grief. And thought I looked at others that have felt loss with empathy. But now I know that I had no idea. Now I feel true empathy. I’m truly sorry for all our aches
ME: Yup, you never thought you could have so much sorrow in your life. But trust me, it gets easier. Like your mother, my mother died of cancer and she was so damn sick. I never wish her back. But i still have moments where I am so sorry that we can't celebrate together.
ME: Please give your sister and dad my regards.
HIM: Yes. I’m very grateful that she doesn’t have to deal with worrying about this pandemic on top of her cancer, etc. etc. Thank you again, Dr. Kelly. You never stop watching over your flock(s). I’ll be sure to pass your message on to Kelly and my Dad. Take care and stay healthy.
