Rwanda

In Pursuit of the Silverback Gorillas

Sept 25- Oct 6, 2024

Sept 24- PA

I head to the airport where I will spend the night and leave my car for the duration of the trip. I've started doing this for most of my trips as it just makes getting to the airport that much easier on the day of my travel.

Sept 25- PA/In flight

My flight is @2:30PM from PHL  I head to Washington DC for a pain in the ass layover.  Then I head to Belgium and then finally get to Rwanda.  Today is a day of hurry up and wait.

Today is the day. We go to the Volcano National Park to see the gorillas in the wild.  We have a limited one day pass to wander the park and find them.  There are only 380 of these gorillas in Rwanda and we are in pursuit of some of them. We meet in the park at 8AM, all 90 of us who will be hiking up th mountain to see the infamous gorillas.  My group has the oldest participants so we are giving the opportunity to climb us to see the gorilla family that was only an hour away yesterday.  We set off with our leader guide, two trackers who walk ahead of us and a porter for each of us.

In the evening, a gorilla vet came to our hotel and talked to us about the work his oranization is doing to keep the gorillas safe from us.  He has his work cut out for him.

Oct 4- Rwanda

We had a morning hike to see the golden monkeys but I didnt go as I have done enough hiking in Rwanda and I was still recovering from yesterday's ambitious hike.

After lunch, we went to the Ellen DeGenerous Museum. Her wife built this museum for her 60th birthday. And it tells the story of the struggles of the gorillas.

Oct 5- In Flight

We left northern Rwanda in the AM and got back to Kelgalli in time for lunch.  We spent the afternoon, ewaiting and waiting to get to the airport and head home.  Danny asked his wife to meet us at the airport so that we could meet each other and it was a nice way to end this magnificent trip.

Oct 6- PA

I went from Rwanda to Brussels to Frankfurt to Philly to West Chester.  I got home around 6 PM and went right to bed. What a wonderful trip.
