A Novice to AI
A Novice to AI
2023
I was on a zoom call and someone gave a presentation that was so interesting and informative. So I sent her a text and asked if she could help me understand how she out her zoom presentation together. This was her response and I clearly had no idea what she was talking about. I had a moment of feeling left behind and realized I have some catching up to do in my world of technology.

First Pour
Jake's Bar
West Chester, PA
February 2023
We come here frequently. It's a corner tap room in a college town. In the morning, when they open at 8AM, the 3rd shift workers wanders in and has a drink before they head home and go to bed. Around noon, the postal workers, the construction guys and other men in various vest uniforms sit at the bar. In the early afternoon, college kids come in and fuel up before they go to their college dives. In the evening, the locals wander in and take up all the seats at the bar. They all know each other and are in no need of much conversation.
One day, I decided that I wanted to get there when it first opens up and get the first pour of the day. For reasons I can't explain, I saw this as some sort of badge of honor. So my two friends and I showed up at 7:45 AM and knocked on the door. Someone called out to us to let us know that the bar wasn't open yet. I called back and told him that I knew it didn't open until 8 AM but I wanted to make sure I was the first pour of the day. He shouted out, "What?" and I yelled back that I wanted to get the first pour of the day. He asked if that was a new thing now and I confessed that it was just my crazy idea. He told me he had to drop his kids off to school and when he came back, he made sure I would get first pour. I waited patiently and when he returns, he poured me a beer and my day was now complete.Wednesday, December 17, 2025
Graduation 1973
HS Graduation
Merion Mercy Academy
Merion Station, PA
June 1973
When I was graduating from high school in 1973, I went through the class photos from the last 50 years. I remember looking at the photo of the class of 1923. These students looked to be about 40 at the time of their graduation. And I wondered if I would ever look as old as them.
Then, in 2023, I returned to my old high school and met up with the seniors of the Class of 2023 and they looked like 12 year olds. I don't remember when I ever looked this young.

The Cookie Contest
For our Christmas in July party, we held a cookie contest. I didn't enter any cookies because I hate to cook. I don't have any cooking ingredients in my home and I didn't care about this competition. The winner made cookies that looked like a Santa snowman was melting because it was July. I thought that was clever and it's too bad that I don't have a photo of the winner.

Electing the Speaker of the House
Electing the Speaker of the House
October 2023
Washington, DC
I happened to be in Washington, DC on the day Congress was going to elect a new Speaker of the House. Kevin McCarthy had just been run out of town. And while I knew the vote was going to go to a Republican, it was a disappointment that it went to Mike Johnson, a white, Evangelical, man. As I had feared, this nomination was going to set the USA back.

My 68th Bday
I think the kids enjoyed my birthday celebration more than I did. While I was complaining about my age, they were blwoing out my candles and anticipating the cake. Too bad, the number of candles was such a challenge.

A Girl With A Monkey- Peru
A Girl With A Monkey
Peru
Summer 2003
I am in a wooden boat, floating down a tributary of the Amazon River. The moment is right out of a National Geographic Magazine. My guide sees this little girl, standing on the banks of the river. She is holding a wild monkey and my guide paddles over to her, extends his hand and asks to hold the monkey. She complies and she gives him this adorable monkey. My guide turns to me and offers the monkey to me. I don't want to hold him. I don't like to touch wild animals. What if it has rabies?
And lucky I didn't have to touch him. He quickly bit my guide in the hand which allowed him to break loose and scurry back to the little girl. And when I got home, I scurried to my infectious disease doctor and inquired about the rabies shot.

I met Pat in 2023 while I was at a ceremony at our common high school Alma Mater. I was being recognized on stage and she was sitting in the audience. The principal introduced her to the crowed auditorium and she stood up and waved to us. I had never heard of her.
But, apparently, as she was climbing the ladder of pushing for women and equity, journalists would contact our high school and ask questions about Pat. Apparently, the administration claimed that she never attended our school. Apparently she was an open lesbian. Apparently, her stand on abortion was offensive for this Catholic girls' high school. So they just pretended that they didn't know her. But today, on the day of her 75th year since she graduated, she was finally recognized.

IPA- Irish Style
I love a delicious IPA (India Pale Ale). That is mostly what I drink anymore. And so, when I went to Ireland recently, I was delightfully surprised to see so many offerings of IPA choice. After about my third attempt to find a good IPA, I was told that IPA means Irish Pale Ale. Hence, the hops were barely tasted.
But I did find this India Pale Ale and loved it and loved the seafood chowder that went along with it. And I loved looking out the window and seeing the Irish Sea in full view. And I loved the little fishing village and I loved this day.
