1982

Williamsport, PA
My age: 26-27

School: I enrolled in a doctoral program at Penn State University. My first course was a cross-cultural study in England.  We sent the summer visiting all types of schools throughout England.

Work:  I worked at Loyalsock High School in Williamsport, PA.  I was a high school guidance counselor to 250 students. I loved this job. I really felt as if I made a difference in kids' lives.  I was the youngest faculty member by 10 years and many of the faculty just didn't like the kids.

House- I lived at 527 North Grier Street in Williamsport and the house may have been haunted. I rented a 2- bedroom apartment on the 2nd floor of this old house.

Music
Wild Things Run Fast was released by Joni Mitchell, my favorite artist.
Thiller by Michale Jackson, was released and it is a masterpiece.

Movies
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - didnt see it.
  • Rocky III- I only saw one Rocky movie, the one where we beat Russia.
  • On Golden Pond - I liked it when I saw it but I watched it again and it wasn't as interesting to me.
  • Porky's - it was a bit gross.
  • An Officer and a Gentleman- I loved this movie. 
  • The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas 
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - didnt see it.
  • Poltergeist - didnt see it.
  • Annie- I am so sick of this movie, play and song. 
  • Chariots of Fire - the first CD I bought was the soundtrack of this movie.
  • Gandhi - this was a troubling movie.
Travels:
  • I took a course through Penn State University in England and Scotland for the month of June.
  • I spent a month at the beach on Long Beach Island.
  • I traveld to California during Winter break.  It was the first time I was in CA. 
News events
  • Israeli forces invaded Lebanon. Thousands of Palestinian refugees in refugee camps in West Beirut murdered by Lebanese militia.  This area continues to be a mess. 
  • Israeli returned Sinai to Egypt.  I didn't fully understand the implications of this event.
  •  The First Issue of USA Today was published and it is still published today.
  • Around 700,000 demonstrators gathered in New York City's Central Park protesting the proliferation of nuclear weapons.  This was my first political issue.
  • The International Whaling Commission decides to end commercial whaling. 
  •  Tylenol capsules laced with potassium cyanide kill 7 in Chicago. 
  • Lech Walesa, leader of the Polish Solidarity movement was released from jail. I think he was the true leader who ended teh Cold War.
  •  Yassar Arafat was elected the President of the Palestinian National Council. 
  • Doctors performed the first implant of a permanent artificial heart designed by Robert Jarvik .
  •  Srecession begins in the United States. But it doesn't affect me because I don't have any money.
  • Leonid Brezhnev the General Secretary of the Communist Party died of a heart attack
  • The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC was dedicated under controversy that an Asia woman designed this stunning monument.
  • Gates connecting Gibraltar are opened after 13 years to allow pedestrian access to and from Spain.
  • Graceland the home of Elvis Presley opens to the public 
  • Grace Kelly, Princess Grace of Monaco, died in a car crash. Since I am a Kelly from Philadelphia, people assume she is my relative.
  • The First CD player was sold in Japan. I bought my first player in 1986.
  • The Weather Channel airs on cable television for the first time. 
  • 20 million Elm Trees died in the UK through Dutch Elm Disease and then the disease spread to the USA.
  • Times' Man of The Year is THE COMPUTER and I still didn't have any concept of how this device would benefit me in any way.
Family
  • Kathy, my sister,  gave birth to a baby boy, John.
  • Jim's wife had a baby girl, Caitlin.
  • Sharon, my sister,  had a baby girl, Heather.
  • I had six nieces and nephews at this time.
  • I don't have a car so I had to bum rides from friends, hitchhike or take the bus through life.
