Singing With Bobby McFerrin
Philadelphia, PA
April17, 2018
He is a musical genius. He is mostly known for his awful song, Don't Worry, Be Happy. Personally, I think this is his worst song. He does mostly improv and I could listen to him sing all night. He is so clever and so talented. He makes unusual sounds, uses his body as a percussion instrument. And he always includes the crowd in the singing.
Every year, he goes to the Omega Institute in New York and holds a week long singing class. The tuition is about $1500. And this has been nagging at me for a number of years. But I have been too damn cheap to follow up.
Recently, I went to his website and noticed that he was having a song circle event at his church in the Philadelphia area. The event was free and I scored three tickets. I was so damn excited. I went with two friends and we found a seat, sat down and patiently waited for the moment to start.
Bobby came in, walked right up to us and asked to sit right next to us. We sang for about an hour. I couldn't keep up with his direction. I have no musical talent. We sang in the round and I kept losing my place. And the evening was great fun.
