Prior to Hurricane Sandy (October 2012), it cost $25,000 to raise a house from ground level to 13 feet. Since the hurricane and the mass flooding, insurance companies have mandated that houses on this island be raised to this level if homeowners want to get flood insurance. Now, some contractors are charging $75,000 for this same service. There seems to be something wrong with making a big buck off of someone's disaster.
