You never look at a bird and then one day, you do and the moment fascinated you so you try to see this bird again. And then you find yourself buying a bird book. But then you find a better bird book. And you notice an empty bird feeder in the garage so you fill it. And then a few new birds come to the feeder and you think you have talent to attract birds. So you read up on bird feeders and then make your way to the store to buy another feeder and more seeds. And the birds keep coming. But so do the squirrels and you aren't feeding the damn squirrels so you do your research to figure out how to get rid of these damn squirrels. You don't care if the squirrels die of starvation, they are not welcomed at the bird feeds.
Then there is a show on the TV on birds and you stay home to watch as friends are calling you to come join them at the bar for a drink. Then there is lecture at the library on bird identification and you ask a friend or two to join and they laugh at you so you have to go by yourself. And then you sign up for the lecture series on birds and their habitats. Then you start a bird list and even though there are only 7 birds on your list, it doesn't matter. You have a list and, now, you are a birder.
