What Has Enriched My Life
- earning my master's degree- 1981- I earned a Master' in Education (MEd) in Secondary School Counseling. I became a high school guidance counselor and eventually went on to earn my doctorate degree and become a high school administrator.
- breast reduction surgery- 2010- this was life changing surgery. I didn't know how much pain I was in until I was out of pain.
-becoming a democrat- 1981- I didn't officially change my party affiliation until I had my own place and my parents couldn't see that I was not a republican.
- searching for the perfect IPA- 1996- My brother-in-law gave me a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and I was stunned at how delicious this beer was. I never drank domestic beer again. Now, I frequently visit different breweries in search of where I can find that one perfect beer.
-becoming a good financial saver- 1962- my dad insisted that I open a savings account when I was in the second grade. Then he made me open up a retirement account when I was 22.
-learning to kayak- 2004- Friends and I went for a short afternoon trip and fell in love with the activity. We became instantly obsessed with the sport. Within 2 years, I had six kayaks and a house near the mouth of the chesapeake bay where I would spend the next 12 years kayaking on a yearly basis.
-becoming a birder- 2000- I just purchased my first home and the former owners left their bird feeders behind. One day, a yellow bird landed on the feeder and I thought someone's parakeet got loose. But then another yellow bird showed up and then another and then I didn't know what to think. I later learned that they were American Finches and I found myself waiting for them every day to show up at the federalists.
-traveling to Thailand- 1992- Up to this point, I had only traveled to Europe and it just wasn't adventurous enough for me. Going to Asia for the first time open up a wanderlust in me that has become insatiable.
-spending time with my N&Ns-1981- There are 16 of them and they are all different and fun to be with.
-learning to travel on my own- 2008- I flew to Morocco with no plans or reservations. As I left the airport, a taxi driver asked me where I wanted to go. I told him that I wasn't sure and I told him why. He pulled out a binder of hotel listing and suggested one in particular for the night. It was bit more expensive but it had a gated front door and offered me a but more security until I decided where I wanted to go from there. I traveled for 8 days without incident and I now have no qualms about going to a new place completely on my own.
