St Charles Seminary
Philadelphia, PA
November 2021
I was across the street, looking out the window when I saw this building. I hadn't looked at this place for years. I used to live within walking distance from here. And as a kid, in the mid-1960's, I came here every winter on snow days. We would sled down the hill on the left. It was a steep hill so by the time we got to the bottom, we were flying. The young priests and the seminarians would come out and join us. There were hundreds of them back then. And my female friends and I would fall all over these men and secretly hope that we could lure them away from the priesthood and maybe marry us. We were never successful. And I was a bit surprised to be told many years later by a friend that his brother left the priesthood because "there were just too many gay priests." I guess we never really had a chance to lure them away.
