Losing Her Inventory
Peru
Summer 2004
They came to greet us as we floated in to the poorly made landing pad. These young children were there to sell us "cold coca cola, only one dollar." We didn't want anything but they persisted and followed us all afternoon. Adults, in the village, shooed them away for us. But they kept at it.
As we boarded the boat to leave, they made one more plea for us to buy something. Just then, the girl lost her balance and lost some of her inventory which fell right in the river. The look of panic on her face moved all of us. We quickly reached in to our pockets and threw $1bills at her. She and her brother jumped in the water and retrieved what they could. They waved to us with their clenched fist of dollar bills. And we all let out a sigh of relief knowing that she wouldn't be beaten tonight for her carelessness.
