Gorkha Brewery
Kathmandu, Nepal
December 2017
When I was planning my trip to Nepal, I made up my mind that I was going to visit a brewery. There are only four or five breweries in Nepal and most of them are in Kathmandu. So, i zeroed in on the Gorka Brewery. It was the only one with a website and it was close to where I was staying.
However, it was difficult to make contact with this brewery. I had the receptionist at my hotel call the main office but no one picked up. I tried on three different occasions to contact someone by way of the website. Bit no one responded to my questions.
So one Saturday, I set out on my own to find this damn place. I had a GPS reading but the details were a bit sketchy. I knew I was close but I just couldn't find it. I knew I was on the right street but that didn't matter. I still couldn't find it. I stopped in a travel agent office and several of the clerks stopped everything and searched the Internet for me. They gave me a few landmarks to guide me. But their landmarks were hard to find as well.
Finally, finally, finally, I found it. So I make my way in and am stopped by a receptionist for the building. I tell him I was to go to the Gorka brewery.
"What is the name of the man you want to see, ma'am", he potbelly asked me.
"The one giving out the beer, I tell him jokingly.
"And what is his name", he asked with great patience.
"Can I get a beer here. If I go to the brewery, will someone serve me a beer.
"No ma'am. There is no beer here", he tells me
"Well, where is the beer/" Isn't this the brewery?"
"Yes, but we have no beer here. Maybe if you go down the street, you will find a store that sells beer. But there is no beer here."
I think he was beginning to lose patience with me. And so I leave, disappointed that I didn't get a chance to drink beer in a Nepali brewery.
