1965

1965

Woodbine Avenue
Overbrook
Philadelphia, PA

My age: 9-10

School- Our Lady of Lourdes- My 5th grade teacher was the creepy Miss Coughlin. She was a terrible human being and in hindsight may have been mentally ill.  She should not have been around children as she was demented.

Music- My grandparents gave me the Beatles’ Rubber Soul album for my 10th birthday.  I still have the album. And somewhere around this time, I had a turquoise transistor radio that I carried everywhere with me.  I don’t know how I replenished the batteries as I had no money.  My grandfather must have kept me supplied with batteries.

·      All Day and All of the Night  by The Kinks- I was never a Kinks fan but I liked some of their songs.
·      Back in my Arms Again by the Supremes- Dianna Ross had a stage presence.
·      California Girls by The Beach Boys- I never liked this group.
·      Can’t You hear My Heart Beat by Herman Hermits
·      Count Me In by Gary Lewis & the Playboys- this band didn't have many hits but I liked most of their hits.
·      Do You Believe in Magic by The Lovin' Spoonful- this was just a happy song.
·      Down in the Boondocks by Billy Joe Royal
·      Downtown by Petula Clark- she was a sensation who seemed to appeal to all age groups.
·      Eight Days a Week by The Beatles
·      Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire- this was the beginning of protest songs.
·      Ferry Cross the Mersey by Gary & The Pacemakers his song. - I didn’t understand t
·      For Your Love by The Yardbirds
·      Game of Love by Wayne Fontana
·      Get Off My Cloud by The Rolling Stones
·      Go Now by The Moody Blues
·      Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey- I wasn’t old enough to see this movie so I didn’t get all the nuances of this song.
·      Hang on Sloopy by the McCoy’s- this was a stupid song.
·      Help by the Beatles
·      Help Me Rhonda by the Beach Boys
·      How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by Marvin Gaye
·      I Can’t Get No Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones- I didn’t become a Stones fan until I was in high school.
·      I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) by the Four Tops
·      I Got You (I Feel Good) by James Brown
·      I Got You Babe- Sonny & Cher- they were an old twosome but they had lots of hits.
·      I Know a Place by Petula Clark
·      I Like It Like That - The Dave Clark Five
·      I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am by Herman Hermits- we sang this song in our house all the time.
·      I’m Telling You Now by Freddie and The Dreamers- Freddie was a weird dude.
·      It Ain't Me Babe by The Turtles
·      It's Not Unusual by Tom Jones
·      It's the Same Old Song by Four Tops
·      King of The Road by Roger Miller- this was sort of an old people’s song.
·      Love Potion No. 9 by The Searchers
·      Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds- a hippie song.
·      Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter by Herman Hermits- I loved Herman’s British accent.
·      My Girl by the Temptations- Motown was hitting the scene.
·      Nowhere to Run  Martha and the Vandellas
·      Poppa’s Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown- this guy had soul.
·      Shotgun by Junior Walker
·      Stop in The Name of Love by the Supremes
·      Tell Her No by The Zombies
·      The ‘In’ Crowd by the Ramsey Lewis Trio Band
·      The Name Game by Shirley Ellis- the bad boys at school used to rhyme dirty words to this name game.
·      This Diamond Ring- Gary Lewis & The Playboys- this song made me feel bad for the guy who got shafted.
·      Turn, Turn Turn to Everything There is a Season by the Byrds- this was a hippie song.  It was used in our religion classes a lot as a way for the nuns to appear relevant to our world.
·      Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers- I like a lot of their music.
·      What the World Needs Now Is Love" Jackie DeShannon- this was a feel-good song.
·      What’s New Pussycat by Tom Jones- he appealed to middle aged women.  They used to throw their bras at him when he performed live.
·      Wonderful World  Herman's Hermits- this was another feel-good song.
·      You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’ by the Righteous Brothers- these guys had powerful voices.

Movies
  • Mary Poppins-  I loved this movie.  I just watched again last year and it was still magical after 50 years.
  • The Sound of Music – I’m not sure I fully understood the complexities of the Nazi’s influence on the world.
  • My Fair Lady -  I loved the English accents.
  • What's New Pussycat? – I was too young for this movie.
  • Cat Ballou – I was afraid of Lee Majors’ character.

Travels- we went to a ranch in West Virginia. We went hiking and horseback riding and sat around a camp fire at night.  This was a whole new world for me.

Family-

  • ·       My uncle was shipped off to Viet Nam for a year.  He was in the Marines. My aunt and cousins moved to NJ for the year to be closer to her family. We all spend Thanksgiving together and I remember the tension as someone said grace.  We all cried.
  • ·
  • ·       Someone gave my father an old, electronic, play-by-numbers keyboard. We all gave it our best shot to master these skills but we were all very unsuccessful.  We sounded dreadful.  I don’t remember how long we had the keyboard but one day, it was just thrown out and no one seemed to mind.
