Ouch

OUCH
Pains and Aches

I am fairly healthy and I don’t find myself in painful situations too often.  I guess I’ve been lucky.  I’ve had a few moments, but no many:

  • ·      Kneeling on the floor, working off a small board on the floor, I positioned my exacta knife for one swift cut of the mat board.  It didn’t go as planned. Using all my strength, I pulled but didn’t stop.  The result: the knife kept going and cut through my brand-new jeans and upper thigh.  That hurt.
  •
  • ·      Not learning from my previous attempt to use the exacta knife, this time, I somehow lodged the knife in my left thumb. Shortly thereafter, I got rid of the knife.
  •
  • ·      My shoulder was pulled out of socket twice before the age of five.  That must have hurt but I don’t remember.
  •
  • ·      I slid on a wet floor and went flying down two steps and landed flat on my back. The slapping noise scared the hell out of me.  I laid there for a minute, just to get my wind and wit back.  When I got up, I ached but nothing was broken and in a few minutes, I was moving on.
  •
  • ·      I had a bout of planar fasciitis for 10 months and that was painful with no end in sight.  Then it just went away.
  •
  • ·      I am prone to ear aches. I’ve ruptured my ear drum twice.  That was painful and I lost my balance as well.
  •
  • ·      Just to be annoying, I am going to throw in here that I do not get headaches.
  •
  • ·      I have arthritis in my left hip and knees.  Going down steps just kills me. Standing for any period of time can really cripple my movement.
  •
  • ·      I am a nail biter. Sometimes, and I’m not even aware of it, I bite to the skin which hurts. Then I’m angry with myself for the rest of the day.
  •
  • ·      My broken nose hurt.
A bee got stuck between my eye glasses and my eye lid.  He bit me a few times and that        ached.
  •
  • ·      My right shoulder has a bone spur.  The doctor said there were two things we could do to address this issue: surgery or exercise.  I picked surgery and he insisted on the exercise options.  Hence, 25 years later, the spur still plagues me.  Some days it feels as if my arm weighs a ton.
  •
  • ·      My tonsils were removed when I was three. I have a fleeting memory of being in the hospital but I don’t remember anything any pain.
  •
  • ·      In 2010, I had major surgery and no pain. I was given painkillers immediately after the surgery and then became exceedingly nauseous. After vomiting for the third time, the nurse suggested that I try to go without the painkillers if possible as she speculated this is what caused me to be sick. So, I took no more pain medicine. I couldn’t believe it.
  •
  • ·      My foot bothered me one day and the pain increased in to the evening.  I ended up in the emergency room where no clear diagnosis was made.  I was given pain killers and a temporary cast, which I wore for a few days. I think it was a bout of gout.
  •
  • ·      I had Lyme’s Disease in 2009. That illness wreaked havoc on my system for months:
§  I dislocated my sterno-clavicle joint. That hurt like hell. Just the slightest touch was excruciating. I walked around with my arm in the sling for 10 days.

§  I had chronic sinus infections for a year.

§  I had a fever of 104°. My head and neck hurts so much but I just wanted my head to snap off my shoulders and go away.

§  I had hot bruises that bled through my skin. This was mostly gross but the heat generated was uncomfortable.
