Congressman John Lewis
CARE Conference
Washington, DC
May 2015
I was just a little too young to understand the complexities of the early 1960's Civil Rights Movement. I am also white so there really wasn't an urgency in my community to understand, accept, agree and stand up. It's taken my entire adult life to learn about the hardships and challenges of those who did stand up for justice. John Lewis was one of these courageous people. He got hit in the head with a baseball bat and came back again the next day to stand up to the injustices of our country. I don't have that much courage. I can run on the mouth about injustice but I don't have the courage to stand up and risk being physically abused in the process. I hold Congressman Lewis in high esteem.
