Riding the Train Across the Country- Day 2

Riding the Train Across the Country- Day 2
East Coast to West Coast
February 12- 15, 2017

The train rattled through one small town after another, all night long.  The conductor blew the horn as we approached cross sectional of the tracks. At 3 AM, we stopped somewhere in Ohio and several single mothers got up, woke up their small children and got off the train.

Lots of Amish came aboard and they seemed oblivious to the time of the night and the "quiet hours" mandate.  They were abuzz with excitement to be on the train and they laughed and talked to each other in loud voices. It was hard to sleep in the midst of their excitement.

At 9AM, we pulled in to Chicago and I had to change trains.  At 3PM, I picked up my new connection.  In a few hours, we would be in Iowa and I would be meeting up with my friend Sam who would join me for the remainder of the trip.  The train was crowded and I worried that we wouldn't get to sit together.  But the ticket agent assured me that people would clear out in the next hour or two and this wouldn't be a problem.  She was right.  People did leave.  But again, it seemed as if the Amish dominated the train.
