Leaving Us

Leaving Us
Virginia
August 2016

Jamison just left us.  He's gone, never to come back home except maybe to visit.  He finished high school in June.  He barely finished.  He was finished with the bullshit of high schooling in February.  But he had to hang in there and do at least the mediocre work needed to get that diploma in June.  He  got it and then he was ready to go.  He was aching to become an adult and move on.

He signed up to be a soldier in the army.  His dream for 15 years has been to become an Ranger. That's all he talked about.  He didn't have any other dreams, not even a slight deviation of this plan.  So he signed up for the army in March and prepared for deployment in October.  He could hardly wait.

I wanted to take him to the Oktoberfest in Germany with me.  I was going in mid-September and I asked him to come along with me.  He seemed excited about the idea and I saw it as an opportunity for us to have an adult experience together.  I could hardly wait.

So, when I got his phone call in mid-august, telling me that he was shipping out in two weeks, I tried to feign excitement.  But really, I was heartbroken.  He was too young, in my opinion, to run off to the Army.  But he did.  Jameson left us.  He's gone, never to be a little boy again.
