Whenever I walked in to town, a student or two always came with me to help with my translation and transportation issues. I always needed and appreciated their help. But I also took lots of photos along the way. And with every shot I took, I was asked, "Why did you take that photo? What interests you about that?" I'd offer an explanation which tended to surprise them. "You don't have this in your country?" they would add.
"No, we don't have murals like this in my country," I'd respond.
"Then how are people to know the rules if you don't post them in public," one of them asked about this particular mural. She reminded me that many Chinese don't read and need the visual effect.
Point well taken.
