Heading to the Sahara Desert
Morocco
July 2008
• Mid- afternoon heat at 44°C (120F)
• Long bus drive through long stretches of empty roads
• Fifteen of us, mostly strangers to each other, heading to the desert from Marrakech
• Lots of water consumed all day and all night
• Lots of rest stops along the way
• Beautiful gorgeous
• A few small towns with very few people
• Camels everywhere: in the towns, on the roads, in the desert
• Same menu in every restaurant
• Miles and miles and miles and miles of the red, sandy desert
• Stars covering the skies
• Hot, hot sand. It hurt my feet to touch the sand
• Mohammed, every male is named Mohammed
• Schweppes Citroen drink as my go to drink
• Couscous
• Mint tea
• Cool water in the canyons
• Sandy winds; The winds brushed against my face and exfoliated my skin
• Scorpions
• Beetles, big, black beetles scurried past us
• Kangaroo rats in abundance
• Drumming as the sun set
• Sleeping under the stars
• Something nibbled on my toe in the middle of the night
• Being dirty and sweaty
• Camel droppings everywhere
• No toilets, no running face, no place to wash my hands
• A slight rain as we awoke in the morning. It only last a minute or two but it was so refreshing.
