Elephants on the Road- Tanzania

Elephants in the Road
Serengeti National Park
Tanzania
February 2016

We are in our safari truck.  The hood is popped up so that we can stand and look at everything and take photo after photos to document this special moment in our lives.  We are one of five trucks, parked in the narrow road. There are herds of elephants on either side of the road. We are shifting and turning and stretching in an attempt to capture the perfect National Geographic photo.

One large elephants turns and begins to walk towards us.  No command appears to have been given. But all of the other elephants fall in to place and follow this leader. Slowly and quietly, they meander through a narrow opening between truck two and truck three. We are all silent and watching with delight and fear. We are so close, we could reach out and touch these magnificent beasts. But we also know something could spook then and they could charge at us at any moment and we would be defenseless.

But they don’t charge at us. They just meander past us, quietly, slowly and orderly.  We stand in absolute silence, filled with gratitude for this moment of beauty and tranquility.  The moment is spiritual.
