They’re Picking On Me Again

Two girls come in to my office to see me. Jenny is a new girl who just started at our
school a few weeks ago and I had asked her to stop in to let me know how things
are going for her. Heather has joined her as her sidekick, as one to keep her
company because no cool kid can walk down the hall alone in high school.
Everyone must have the appearance of friends,
“How’s it going, is it getting any easier for you”, I ask as
I know she was having a few problems with some of the kids.
“The kids are picking me again”, she tells me with
exasperation. “ It ‘s so hard being the new person. Mrs. Hynes told me it would
be difficult and that I should just give it some time but it’s been two months
and I’m tired of giving it time. What can I do to get them to stop picking on
me?”
I really don’t have a good answer but as I am about to spew
out some insipid response, Heather chimes in, “Don’t bother worrying about it.
They’ve been picking on me since the first grade. Just get used to it.”
