Bloomsday

Bloomsday
A Tribute to James Joyce
The Rosenbach Museum
Philadelphia, PA
June 16, 2024

It was a perfect day for this event, maybe a bit too hot and sunny but it was great to be outdoors on this beautiful day.  Each year, this museum pays tribute to Jame Joyce's novel, Ulysses.  The museum is in possession of the original manuscript and various high-brows in the city sign up to read a few pages from the novel and by the end of the day, most of the book has been read out loud to the general public. And the audience sits, mostly silently, and listens with enthusiasm or until they finally have had enough of listening to a confusing story. The museum is also opened and two pages of the hand written manuscript is all display for everyone to read.

There was a beer garden so we went there for a delicious beer. Once seated in the shade, I found that I was particularly drawn to people watching as a crowd of individuals showed up that doesn't usually hang in my circle. There were people who were proudly dressed to look like James Joyce. Many people were well dressed for the event. Some came with their individual copy of the book and read along. There were too many dogs, panting and sitting under chairs. and the heat was too oppressive for them. Older people tended to have umbrellas that they used to shield from from the sun. And after two hours, I was finished with the event and I went home.

Boats and Floats

Boats and Floats

I have an obsession.  I buy lots of things that float on water. I love, love, love to float in the water.  I could spend hours in the water, just floating.  I can't swim and I don't like to move around in the water.  I just like to float. As so at one time in my life, I had all of the following:

  • Blue Lagoon-a large, circular float that accomodated 8 adults.  it popped after ten years.
  • Blue Lagoon II- a large, square float that accomodated 6 adults. I cut it up and threw it away.  It was too big to manage.
  • 14 Ft sailboat
  • 1917 Ceder Canoe
  • 1965 Boy Scout canoe- I eventually gave it to a man who was managing my house while I was teaching in China.
  • 12 ft sit in kayak- I still have it but I don't use it enough.
  • 14 ft ocean sit on kayak- I gave it to Melissa
  • 10 ft sit in kayak
  • 6 ft, kid's sit on kayak
  • 12 ft, tandem, inflatable kayak- eventually, I gave it to my young neighbors who were so grateful.
  • 7 ft yellow, inflatable kayak- I traded it for a composite wooden paddle

No kayaking today.

I have kayaked in icy conditions before but I don't think my paddle could chop through this ice. And I'm not going to suit up and find out. I will drink a beer instead.

Right you are.
