November 2022

 November 2022

1- TU- PA

I drove up to Litiz to go to the Fetisb Brewery (1). I liked the place.

On the way home, I stopped at sushi restaurant (bday goal) and bought way too much food.  So I took most of it home.  And I loved what I got.

2- W- PA

It's All Souls' Day which mean I publish my yearly list of all my former students who have died. And as usually, I am getting lots of traction on this post.  And, of course, people are filling me in on classmates who have died. And, of course, I am suspicious that too many of them are drug overdoses.  The obit lists that the person just died suddenly at home and donations to recovery programs are encouraged.

In the late afternoon, I met KF to go to the movies at BMFI. We went to see Tar and it was almost three hours and very confusing.  I can't tell if I liked it or not.

The Phillies played their 4th championship game and lost and now the entire tri-state area is devastated.  People can't think straight because they all had it in their heads that we were going to win this World Series with ease.

Twitter response to Mitch McConnell: Here's how Biden has positively affected my life: he doesn't encourage violence, a cap on my medicine, reduced cost for hearing aids, my SSI and medicare are not up for grabs. And the women in my family can still make their own decisions about their bodies. #VoteBlue2022

Twitter: I am happy to see that all of the GQP’s fear mongering efforts to warn us about fentanyl laced candy resulted in 0 incidents. Good job in creating a crisis what didn’t exist. #GQPpropaganda

3- TH- PA

I slept too late this morning.  When I wear a sleep mask to bed, I do better at sleeping through the night.  This morning, I slept soundly until 11:30AM.  Usually, I get up at 7 to relieve myself.  But I slept through that moment.

Because I have OCD, I am worried about my brewery county for the 2022 year.  Last year, I visited 82 breweries.  I am only up to 60 and there are only two months left.  So I decided to visit another new brewery today.  I drove to Doylestown to try out Geronimo Brewery (2) and  I really liked the place.

I watched the movie, Deep Water, about a time (1980 to mid 1990s) in Australia where guy men were just murdered and the police didn't bother to investigate the deaths.  Many of them were just listed as suicides as some of the men were thrown over cliffs and in to raging water. Some of the murderers were found and were surprised to learn that murdering gays was illegal.

The Phillies lost again and this next game is do or die and I think the fan base has already died.

4- F- PA

I had another damn school dream.  I am so tired of these dreams.  It's been 12 years since I started having them.

In the afternoon, I sat in the lounge and chatting up Bob and David. We discussed politics and came up with all the solutions of the problems of the world.

In the evening, I went to a show at WCU with Lauren.  We watched a two person circus show.

Lauren drove through campus and gave me a tour of WCU (bday goal). I can’t believe I’ve lived  here for 5 years and I have no idea how big this campus is.

Afterwards we went for dinner and drinks at Sedona Tavern.  I had a flight of beers and I had a delicious pumpkin ale, Warlord by Southern Tier.  Now I have to go out and find that beer.

5- SA- PA

I had yet another school dream and in this one, I am finally let go of my job.  I wonder if this dream had anything to do with the fact that Elon Musk just fired thousands of Twitter workers by email yesterday.

In the afternoon, I ushered at Uptown.  They had a Japanese Dance Company, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, perform and it was so damn boring.  It was driving me crazy to be there, in the middle of the afternoon, on a gorgeous day.

Tricia texted me to tell me that Bill has covid. She is still negative.

It was also Peter's bday party that I had to miss because I was ushering.  I love that kid.  He had such a beautiful face.

I picked up some pork dumplings at Bon Chon Restaurant (bday goal) and they were dreadful and I will never eat there again.

The Phillies are playing again tonight.  It's do or die.  I am in the lounge and other people are watching the game but I don't hear any shouting so the results must not be good.

Phillies Update: they lost the World Series.  And I'm OK with it.  Now we can all move on.

6- SU- PA

I got to meet Theo today and he is adorable. Deirdre had an open house event for many of us to come meet  him.  But covid got in the way for most of the group so just Jimmy, Joann and I were there. And he is adorable.

7- M- PA

It's 74F and my balcony door is still wide open all day and night.  My balcony garden is still blooming and it certainly doesn't feel like a late fall day to me.

In the evening, I went to Sally’s house for dinner. Stacey joined us and of course I brought a beer sample for us to try. And it was annoying that it is now dark by 5PM due to yesterday's clock change.

8-TU- PA

It's Election Day and democracy in on the ballot.

I spent four hours at the polls. It was sunny and cold and windy.  I have 4 layers on and I will still cold. And yesterday it was 74.

After leaving the polls, I headed over to Amore Pizzeria and Restaurant- (bday goal). My meal was delicious and I think I am going to get two more leftover meals from this pile of pasta. The cashier recommenced that I try the chicken and broccoli penne in a rose sauce.

Twitter: Our new PA Governor: Josh Shapiro, a pro-choice candidate!!! Thank you PA. Now we need to vote in #Fetterman.

Twitter: Yes, we delivered in PA today. #JoshShapiroForGovernor #FettermanIsTheBetterman

9- W- PA

I stayed up until 5:30 AM to listen to the damn election results.  We had big wins in PA. The new governor, US Senator, US Representative, and my PA Representative all won.  The PA House of Representatives flipped to D. On the national level, Sarah Palin lost miserably. Lauren Boebert is struggling to hold on to her seat and that makes me so happy.  Warnock is ahead of Walker but the race is so close that they will go to a runoff election in December.  Beto lost in TX and did Stacey Abrahams in GA and they are big losses to me.

Dom and Jaye came by and we went to Kildaires (bday goal) for lunch.  I was here just last St Patrick's Day for a beer.  But this is the first time I ate there.  I had a delicious reuben sandwich and a tasty citrus hazy IPA.

I heard from Mike Wynn, a former student from the Class of 2002.  His class is holding a 20th high school reunion during Thanksgiving and he wants me to stop by.  Maybe I will get a group of teachers and we will crash the event.

Tweet: Hey republicans, now is the time to #DumpTrump . He’s costing you too, too much.

10- TH- PA/NY

As I left my apartment to drive to NY, I opened my door to the hallway and I could feel that the heat had been turned on.  The hallway was so much warmer than my apartment. I am hoping that I can get away with another year of not having to turn on the heat in my apartment.

Today is Road Trip #2022- #9- I am off to NY to go to Quentin and Brielle's wedding. Patricia joined me for the trip as Bill has covid and she needed a ride to the wedding.  We stayed at the Crabtree Inn in NY.  The drive was effortless.

Later in the evening, Jimmy and Joann showed up and we went off to dinner at the nearest restaurant. And then we were all in bed by 10 PM.  Damn, I am getting old.

11- F- NY

Quentin and Brielle get married today. And the ceremony and reception were great fun.

We went to breakfast in the hotel around 9 AM and when I looked out the window, I see Brielle and Quentin coming in.  The wedding prep had begun. Kathy and Jim came in a few minutes later.  And then Brielle's family arrived for their make up sessions.

It's raining all day.  That's a disappointment as the wedding will now be inside.

12- SA- NY/PA

The Greenbergs hosted a brunch at their hotel.

Our return ride home was easy and uneventful.  And I got home in plenty of time to take a nap.  That option is both welcomed and dangerous.  I hope I don't oversleep and miss the concert.

In the evening I went to a Joan Osborn concert at the World Cafe with Bill and Pat McRae.

Results are in from the NV race and a democrat won a senate seat which now secures our majority in the Senate.  This is yet another great feat.

13- SU- PA

It's fucking cold today.  It's official, we will have no more warm days now until March 2023.  The heat is on in the building.  My balcony door is closed for the winter.  My warm coats are out and I am cranky.

Today was William's bday party. He is 32. We had a quick party for him at Tricia's house. I'm not sure he really wanted to be there with us.  There were a couple of football games that seemed to interest him more than the celebration.

On the way back to my apartment, I stopped at the grocery store and wandered over to the beer section. I found a pumpkin ale pack and I got a mixed six pack of other beers.  I am a bit ahead of myself on the beer front right now.

@ScottWalker WHY??? Why do you want to limit voting options for people. If you truly believe in democracy, you should work to make voting as accessible as possible.

14- M- PA

It’s cold. It’s winter. Tonight it will go below freezing and I will probably lose my balcony garden.

In the afternoon, I drove to Hershey, PA and went to the ZeroDay Brewery- (3)- PA. I had a pumpkin ale, nitro milk stout, IPA DIPA. The IPA beers were nothing special. I really liked the pumpkin beer. I also ordered two tacos that were delicious. I liked this place.

I stopped by the ProBass shop and picked up a few gadgets that I don't need. And then I went to Serria and picked up a few more pieces of things to clutter my apartment and my life.

I started looking at trips to Hawaii and the Philippines in January. I cant get over that I am having such a hard time getting back in the groove of traveling. I've lost my nerve to just dream big and make it happen. I must book this trip tomorrow.

15- TU- PA

My plants survived the cold night. As a matter of fact, one geranium is starting to bloom again. They seen invincible to me.

I am hanging in my apartment building all day. I m not going outside at all and that is something that is so hard for me to do. I always have the feeling that I should go somewhere every day. I suffer from feeling like I am missing out on something if I stay home.

I really need to cultivate the idea that I should stay home and clean my damn apartment. I only have 800 sq ft. Why is it so hard for me to keep this place clean and orderly.

Tweet: Trump announced that he plans to run again and I just wish he would die. I hope he chokes to death on a KFC chicken wing. We have had to hear from this idiot every day since 2015.

16- W- PA

Damn, it's cold. It's miserable out there. And I am not dressing appropriately. I have to button up.

We had our Friendsgiving dinner tonight in the lounge. It was well received and it seemed like we were back to our pre-covid numbers. Sally joined us and everyone was exceedingly nice to her and showed great concern for her broken hip.

17- TH- PA

It dipped below freezing in the middle of the night. In spite of the temperature, my garden is still thriving.

Joann and Tricia both notified us that they tested positive for covid today. We were all at the wedding this weekend. I wonder how many people caught it there. It seems that everyone who has been vaccinated is now getting it. Im relieved that none of us are ending up in the hospital.

I got up and struggled with deciding how I want to spend the day. I had thought about going to Bethany Beach, DE to try out the last brewery in DE for me. Then I was going to get a hotel room on the beach and spend the night and then drive through Bombay Hook on the way home. But that was too much energy and it was now later afternoon by the time I got myself together so I decided just to go to Bombay Hook Wildlife Reserve. I went in search of snow geese. Their migration starts any minute now. But it didn't start today. I think I saw lots of avocets. There was a blue heron hanging around. And there were plenty of those damn Canada geese. I will have to come back closer to the end of December.

Afterwards, I went to Blue Earl Brewery (4). Coincidently, while I was there, I was on Facebook and my memories form two years ago showed up and I was right here at this brewery. I wonder if I ordered the same beers. Today I had a pumpkin ale, a milk stout, a hazy IPA and an IPA and I liked all of them.

On the way home, I stopped at Total Wine and bought three more types of pumpkin ale. I have too much beer in my refrigerator.

It's 9 PM and the temperature is 32F. It's officially freezing outside.

There are rumors that Twitter is going to shut down tonight. After being purchased by Elon Mush for 44 Billion $$$, it seems that he may have run it in to the ground and tonight may be the night it dies. We will just have to wait and see.

Tweet: Raskin for Speaker of the House. #ThankYouSpeakerPelosi

18- F- PA

I called KT at midnight to wish her a happy birthday. She's 72 today and her new life as a single woman seems to be a bit of a struggle for her. She's worried about money. She's worried about her dog. She's looking for a job and she doesn't have enough interaction with people.

The Attorney General has hired a special prosecutor to look at two of the Trump investigations. I take that as a good sign. The AG has the goods but he wants to be sure this doesn't come across as political.

We might have our first snow shower tonight; it certainly is cold enough.

19- SA- PA

It didn't snow. My garden is still thriving and it's too cold to play outside.

I struggled all day in trying to decide if I should buy my turkey today or not. It has to thaw for a few days depending on its size. I have no idea what size to get and I have no room in my refrigerator to thaw the damn thing. I could probably thaw it on my balcony if I could keep it from insects. I have an idea that I may try to brine it. But I really don't know what I'm talking about. I have no idea as to how to do that.

Penn State played today and won. This is the first game I watched this season and I watched it alone. It was a blow out game so it wasn't very interesting. I wanted to watch the game with the Chester County Penn Staters but I couldn't find anyone to go with me.

Trump was allowed back on Twitter after being kicked off almost two years ago. He is so reckless.

Twitter: So is the orange idiot going to stay with his truth social or does he compete against himself and hang on Twitter?? 🤣😂😅😃😅😂🤣

20- SU- PA

I am making Thanksgiving dinner this year and I feel incompetent. I bought my turkey today. It's 11 lbs. There may not be enough room in my refrigerator to defrost it. I may have to leave it on my balcony.

It is bitter cold today. The wind just makes it worse. I have to get my scarves and mitten and gloves out. I hate that moment.

Kristen was in the lounge this evening. She was grading papers but I talked her in to join me in a pumpkin beer tasting. I brought down four of my best beers and we drank and compared tastes. Debbie join us and it was fun just to sit and talk bull shit. And Kristen has offered to cook my turkey for me!!

There was yet another mass shooting today in Colorado Springs. A MAGA trumper shot up a gay bar and killed 5 and injured 17 more people.

21- M- PA

My garden died last night. I guess a temperature of 23F was just too much for my little balcony garden.

KF and her mother and I went to see the movie, The Banshees of Ireland. Ive seen the previews and was looking froward to it. But, damn, it got so dark and so brutal that I left the theatre a bit shaken from the story. It didn't end nice. But the cinematography was gorgeous.

I came home and sat in the lounge. I was here by myself when a man come in for a cup of coffee. He asked me what I was doing and I was in the mood to chat him up. So he took a seat and chatted with me for 10-15 minutes. It was nice chatting with him. Sometimes I come down here and hide behind my laptop and ignore people. I think I need to work on being more engaged with other people.

22- TU- PA

Tricia texted me to tell me that she doesn't want me to cook the Thanksgiving turkey because I may not clean it enough and then everyone would be sick for the wedding. She is out of control with her anxiety and I feel beaten up by it. Our conversation derailed my day. I'm in a funk and I am hoping I can shake it off by tomorrow.

23- W- PA

Well, I wasn't able to shake off my depression today. When I have an episode, it usually lasts about 5 days. I spent the day in bed, angry and humiliated by her comments.

We had another mass shooting today. We have so many of them that I can no longer read about them or follow the on the news.

Twitter: Clinton called half of Trump's supporters deplorable. She said the other half of his supporters “feel that the government has let them down and are desperate for change. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well,” she said.

Twitter: How many women have committed any of these mass murders?

Twitter; Do you have any idea how many students start college, accrue loans, drop out, never earn a degree but still have college loans. These are just some of the people benefiting from this pause and the potential $10,000 loan relief. These people deserve a break.

24- TH- PA

It's Thanksgiving Day and I don't feel festive. I am losing all interest in holidays. I used to love this day when my mother was alive. I loved gathering at her big dining room table and eating a great meal. Now, I don't care too much.

I took my load of food to Tricia's house. But I was still offended by our conversation from the other day. I stayed civil but I was on guard. I don't like to be hanging around that much tension.

It's ten more days until Lauren gets married.

25- F- PA

I had another reoccurring school dream.

I spent the day cooking my damn turkey. I stuffed it with oranges, grapefruit, onions and garlic. I marinated it with sesame oil. I cooked it for three+ hours and then spent quite some time, chopping it put and putting it in bags for later consumption. I have more turkey than I will ever need in my lifetime.

I watched the final Penn state game and we won.  At first, it appeared as if it was going to be a blow out and the game was boring.  Then the opposing team almost caught up and that was nerve wracking.  We did win but it wasn't fun to watch this game.

I made connect with Pam.  I wanted to make sure she was all set to vote in the GA runoff race on December 6.  She assured me that she was on top of this situation.

I spoke to Annum.  She is annoyed at her landlord because he won't keep the het up to 70F and he turns it down at night.  I had to explain to her that this is standard protocol.

27- SU- PA/DE

Jaye and I went to the movies to see  She Said. Too many rich, powerful men have done so many deplorable things to too many women.  I hope Weinstein rots in jail.

Afterwards, we went to Panera's for a cup of coffee.  We are getting old.  Neither of us wanted to go get a beer.  As we were sitting there, a man come in with three full backpacks, two Target shopping bags and a full fanny pack. He had to be homeless with all that gear. He took up three seating areas and ordered nothing.  It was cold and rainy and bitter.  But he didn't look as if he had been on the streets all day.  He was smartly dressed and dry. After about a half hour, he must have noticed that we were watching him because he picked everything up and move to the back of the restaurant and out of our line of view.

It was still early by the time Jaye  and I left so I ran over to Hangman Brewery (5). I was here right after they opened and were struggling.  Today, they had a nice crowd.  I got a flight: two IPAs, a winter ale and a lager.

I was minding my own business when this very drink woman came over and joined me.  She was the bartender's girlfriend and she is not a beer drinker so she had a box of wine that she was freely pouring for herself. It turns out that this woman is of Irish descent and likes to talk about it and connect with other Irish drunks.  I think we high fives six times and the first time we did, she recoiled a bit and commented that she didn't think my response was going to be so strong.  I tried to tone it down for the other high fives.

She, of course, had a bullshit story.  She was adopted but she found her birth father who never knew he was a dad.  Now she has a relationship with him.  But she isn't speaking to one of them at the moment and it appears as if this is the norm for both of them. There was a lot of dysfunction and chaos in her life. It was fun to talk with her and it was a relief to get away from her.

28- M- PA

For the last two days I have ben listening to Profile of Ignorance by Andy Borowitz. He poses the questions: "Who is the most ignorant person the USA is willing to elect? What brought our county to such a stupid state. Who turned ignorance from a liability to a virtue." Apparently, according to Andy, Reagan, Bush, Palin, Qualye, and Trump could have all completed in a contest of the dumbest, most uninformed leader of the free world. Their pride in their ignorance is frightening.

I finally got my covid vaccine #5. I alway wanted to get my flu shot but they ran out of them.  So now I have to go elsewhere and I know that will never happen.

Most of my evening was spent looking at trips to Hawaii, Turkey and to Cuba.  If I can, I want to schedule all three of them. I also am planning out my trip to Colorado with Clay.

29- TU- PA

I just couldn't sleep at all last night.  I was so restless that I was up several times. I even got up and ate something. I am not alert enough to do anything constructive.  But I cant lay in bed. I think I finally feel asleep around six but the alarm went off at 9 AM.  I am exhausted.

The day started with my six month oncology appointment.  Everything looked good.  I told her that I had had some bleeding and she assures me that this is damage from the radiation.  Sometimes, my bladder is jut going to bleed.

I uploaded Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer on my phone. I've been looking at listening to this audiobook for about a year but it's 17 hours long. I finally checked it out of the library and listened to 6 hours today.

I spent two hours looking to book a trip to Hawaii.  I am having so much trouble with this trip because it is so expensive and I am fighting it.  I don't want to spend $400/hotel but I am afraid I will have to do os it I don't want to sleep on the beach at night.  I did ind a sleeper van that is only $160/night.

Three people came in to the lounge around 9 PM.  They probably had been out to dinner in town.  One woman called out to me, "There she is again.  Always working. She works all the time."  Another woman told me, "you shouldn't work so hard. Stop working."  I told them that I am not working. I'm a writer.  That seemed to appease them.  I should have told them that I write porn.

Twitter: A text from my cousin who lives in Atlanta and is on vacation in OH: “So we checked on our Absentee ballots and figured out that they wouldn’t arrive in NY in time for us to mail them back in time to be counted. We drove 710 miles yesterday and VOTED today!”#WarnockforSenate

30- W- PA

I had a full day planned today. I wanted to have breakfast at Two Bird Cafe. I was going to drop several bags off to Great Drop. I was going to run to BMFI to see a movie and then be back in time to pick up Debbie and drive t Newark to have dinner with Annum. And none of that happens.

I have vertigo today.  I am so damn dizzy that I was afraid to drive.  And the fact that it was rainy and dark didn't add to my enthusiasm at all. Debbie cancelled so i was now out with the possibility that she could drive. By three PM, I still wasn't able to go more than a few steps without feeling dizzy.  So I texted Annum and told her that I couldn't make it.

I think I may be having some inter-ear problem.  I had an ear infection with Covid last month.  My ear is cogged today so I wonder if it is related.  If it isn't better tomorrow, I am going to go to Urgent Care and see if I can get on an anti-boric.  I do not want to have a problem with my ears on the plane.

I wandered down to the lounge because I just had to get out of that damn apartment.  Debbie stopped by and we chatted for a bit.  Sharon stopped by and wanted to talk with us.  Debbie just can't tolerate her so she zoned out while Sharon and I chatted.

After Debbie left, I decided to get in my car, find an ice cream cone somewhere and drive around Gay and Market Street and look at Christmas decorations (bday goal).  The ice cream was great. I had a waffle cone with a scoop of coffee chocolate chip and a scoop of coconut with chocolate chips. The the Christmas decorations were not that impressive.  Most store fronts just had some evergreen swags on the doorways. For the last five years, people have raved about how cute our town looks.  I didn't feel it today.  Maybe it's too early yet and maybe I should walk around during the day.

I booked a trip to Antigua in January for 6 days.  I hope I will be able to snorkel on two of those days. And it looks as there is a jeep island tour available.  It will be nice to get out of the cold.

Some thoughts about this month:
