We Used to Write to Each Other
1982
I just found this letter my sister wrote to me. At the time, I was living in Williamsport, PA and she was living in Wilmington, DE. Like everyone else, we didn't just pick up the phone and call each other. We wrote letters. Now, I never write a letter to anyone.

Dear Bridget,
It seems like every time you come to visit us anymore, you no sooner get here than you have to leave. I wish we could have done more when you were here last weekend. But at least you got a chance to see all of the grandchildren. After you left, Jimmy and Joann came over with the twins and between everyone else, the place was a madhouse. Bud Doyle dropped by to give something to dad, and mom insisted he come in to see all of the kids. He looked so bewildered with everyone running around him, and when he almost fell over Kevin’s toys, he left. I think mom is heavily in to her grandmother role (Dad, I’m not so sure about).
Anyway, I am writing to thank you for my birthday gift. I love it. I decided it was much too nice to sit on a shelf or in some jelly jar, so I took it to work, since I can use it to make my coffee every day. And besides, when I get nervous, I can always rub it and use it as worry beads. I love the way it feels. Thanks so much again. I will think of you every time I stir my coffee.
Hope everything is going well at your counseling office, and your students haven’t gotten out of hand. You really should write a book about your experience. Some of them are not to be believed (in fact, if Susie Kelly were telling them, I’m not sure I would believe her).
Are you going down the shore for Tom and Peggy’s party? I don’t think I can go because we have our last Lamaze class Friday night and Glenn doesn’t think he can spare the weekend due to tests, etc. Of course, chicken-me doesn’t want to drive down by herself on Saturday. We have so much to do anyway. Sometimes I get so nervous when I think about it. I still can’t believe I am going to be a mother! I already feel sorry for my child.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSEF AND PLEASE WRITE.
LOVE SHARON AND GLENN
