Famine Food Truck

Famine Food Truck
Washington, DC
May 2017
by Oxfam America

I am standing by this food truck.  The staff members are distrubinng literature to every one who passes by them.  They are raising awareness about the problems of hunger in this world.  One woman walks up to the window and wants to know what food they are serving.  The staff member begins to convey the message that there is no food on this truck, a symbolic gesture of the fact that too many people in this world are constantly hungry. The woman walks away, annoyed that her time has been wasted.

Garden 2018

Garden 2018
My Apartment Building
West Chester, PA

I miss my garden.  I love living in my new apartment but I really miss my lush garden at my old house.  So I will settle for this small corner on my balcony.

Heroes

Heroes

We all need heroes.  I admire courageous people, people who stand up for what they believe, no matter what the cost.
Here are mine:

  • RBG- she has just come under my radar.  She's become an icon and I recently watched her documentary movie and was sorry that it took me so damn long to admire her.
  • Malala- At 15, she stood up to the Taliban and risked her life because she felt strongly about her education.  And I wasted most of my formal education.
  • Pope Francis- he is a man of peace and love.
  • MLK- I think our world would be so different if he had been allowed to lead his dream.
  • Robert Kennedy- I love the speech he gave the night MLK was murdered.
  • Mother Theresa- she lived in ugliness and only saw beauty
  • Joe Paterno- his career ended with great sadness and anger but I still admire him.
  • Obama- the white racists in our country were ugly to him but he never stooped to name calling as Trump does.
  • Lech Waleasl- I give him credit for ending the Cold War.  He stood up to his government and successfully chipped away at communism.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev- Russian leader- he fought to bring elections to Russian and sacrificed his opportunity to hold on to his position.
  • Atticus Finch- OK, I know he is a fictional character but there are people who have risked all in an effort to stand up fro the underdog.
  • Richard and Mildred Loving- the interracial couple from the VA who went to the Supreme Court to fight for their right to live as a legally married couple.
  • Congressman John Lewis- he got hit in the head by a bat and went back to march again the next day for civil rights.  That is courage.
  • Jean Kearns- my freshman Sociology teacher. She encouraged me to believe in myself.
  • Ida- my grandmother- she saw the goodness in everyone.

2013

2013
Carpenter’s Point, MD

My age: 57- 58
from my garden

Home:  I am now living, full time, in a rural community, tucked away from the mainstream and about 30 miles north of Baltimore.  This was a very long, isolated winter. But I do get to spend more time on my garden in the spring and summer. And I now have the opportunity to kayak every day as my house is 20 yards away from the North East River.

School- I took classes at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (AKA Geriatric University). Mostly I took courses in writing, photography, travel and economics. I also took a course at my local community college on photography and zentangle (doodling).

Music- I don't know any music anymore.  I used to listen to music for hours at a time.  But once I moved away from albums and CDs, I stopped playing music.  I listen to it in the car.  Mostly I listen to WXNP, an independent  Philly station that plays singer/songwriters who are well known and unknown.

Movies- I love to go to the movies.
Norway Art Museum
  • All is Lost- I am tired of movies that star Robert Redford.
  • American Hustler- a fun movie to watch.
  • August Osage County- it was OK.
  • The Butler- I enjoyed it.
  • Captain Phillips- thrilling and scary.
  • The Great Gatsby- I thought this movie did a great job of showing Gatsby's extravagance.
  • In a World
  • Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Nebraska- a good story line.
  • Philomena- this movie made me so angry, once again, with the Catholic Church.
  • Saving Mr. Banks- an entertaining movie
The White Cliffs of Dover

Books

  • I am listening to David Sedaris on audiobooks.  He is a    clever writer.  I particularly like his story on being an elf At Macy's during the Christmas season.  It is so damn funny.  I try to listen to this story every year now.

  •  A Walk in The Woods-  I have listened to this book so many times that I can just put in any CD and just pick up the story.    And I still laugh right out loud when I listen to it.
Philadelphia

Travels
  • ·      I spent the summer in Jacmel, Haiti where I supervised the Haiti Family Initiative Program.  We offered a medical clinic, a women’s empowerment class, sports programs, art classes and school-readiness programs.

  • ·      I visited my high school friend, Marie Barcia in England.  We went to see the play, The Book of Mormons.

  •       I traveled to NJ, DE, CO, NY
Norway
  •      I took a trip with the Semester at Sea program. What a great program! I could take a trip like this every year. We traveled by ship for 3 weeks and visited:
  •               England
  •               Germany
  •               Norway
  •               Sweden
  •               Denmark
  •               Latvia
  •               Russia

News events
  • The Affordable Care Act is a controversial piece of legislation that was a great benefit to me.  My health insurance cost dropped $300/month.
  • Nelson Medela died and the whole world mourned for him.
  • Two jerks dropped bombs during the Boston Marathon. And the  Boston cops put on a man hint for them that was admirable and determined.  The cops found those fuckers in two days.
  • Ed Snowden leaked classified information about NSA spying on all of us.
  • The Federal Government shut down for 16 long days.
  • Pope Francis becomes the pope and wins over every one's hearts.
  • Gay Marriage is passed by the Supreme Court.
  • Three women are released from captivity in a house in Cleveland.  The kidnapper was arrested and eventually hung himself in his jail cell before the trial.
  • Detroit filed for bankruptcy. That city has lots of troubles.
  • Haiti
  • The country is up in arms over the killing of Travon Martin by George Zimmerman who is acquitted of murder charges.

Family and friends
  • I had my 40th high school reunion. I made an effort to find every one of my classmates and I was fairly successful.
  • I spent my first winter at Carpenter's Point, MD which is a very rural area.  The winter was quiet, cold, snowy, bitter and longggggg!!!
  • My friends from San Diego visited for a week.
  • My friend, Sue, is diagnosed with cancer of the saliva glands.  I never heard of that cancer.

The Girl from Nicaragua

The Girl From Nicaragua
Nicaragua
Spring 2013

This photo always draws my attention.  I love the penetration of her eyes, the intensity of her stare at me.  However, I truly have no memory of taking this photo.  I only know she is from Nicaragua because this photo was lumped in with all my other photos from that day.

Time's Up

Time's Up
Small Things I am Doing To Liberate ME
  • I'm not wearing dresses any more.  I never liked wearing dresses.  I don't like to wearing heels.  I hate wasting money on stockings.  I am indifferent to shaving my legs.  No more dresses.
  • I'm not cutting the lawn on a regular basis. It's a waste of time.
  • I'm not owning a house again.  I am tired of the responsibilities. I will only rent apartments form here on.
  • I'm not eating cooked carrots and peas ever again.  I hate the taste and texture.
  • I'm not wearing bras much anymore.  I am wearing tee shirts.  It's so much more freeing.
  • I am only buying Hondas anymore.  I don-t think I will be buying many more cars.  But I got almost 250,000 on my Element and I am getting 36-42/miles per gallon on my Civic.  And both cars are so easy to maintain. So I am only doing Hondas from now on.
  • I am not buying any more books.  I have enough books.  And when I finish reading a book, I get rid of it, even if I have to throw it out.
  • I am not taking any more leadership positions: no more Board of Director positions, no more officer in a club.  I will be a worker bee but I am not stepping up to take the lead. It encumbers too much of my time and freedom.

April 28, 2015

A Facebook Posting
April 28, 2015

On this day, my niece and her husband were in Nepal, doing some volunteer work at an orphanage.  A major earthquake struck the area, killing many people and destroying whole communities.

On the other side fo the globe, my nephew, Ryan, was a place officer in Baltimore, MD.  A young, black man had just died in the hands of the police and the city erupted in to five days of anger and riots and chaos.

I posted this on facebook:

April 28, 2015 at 12:29am ·
I have a niece who is traveling in Nepal and a nephew who is a police officer in Baltimore. Life is a challenge at times.

I received 39 Comments which were all a big help:

Selia Wang: which nephew is the police officer?

Alycee Ruley: Prayers for you and your family.

Melissa Christie: I hope that they are safe!

Ginni Outlaw-Buongiovanni: Prayers and hugs Bridget.

Karen Carty: They will both be in my prayers.

Fonda Akins: Praying for their safety!

Sissy Sayer Staeger: Will pray for their safety.

Shelley Evans: Thinking of you and your family, Bridget E Kelly!

Jamie Downs: I hope they are safe and you don't have to worry about them along with all the others in these two disaster zones. Prayers.

Lucinda Taber: Prayers for their safety in both locations

Denise Kelly Moore: Prayers to them and all

Marilyn Vaughn: I hope they are both safe.

Carole Downs: Hope they are both safe - sending prayers.

Rita Young Kanouse: Prayers

Katie Uhler: oy....

Marge Dorrin: Bless them

Debra Ward Metz: God bless them..

Pamela H. Hoy: Prayers to all…our world is truly a complicated place which grows smaller day by day.

Diane Wescott :I hope they are safe. Keep us posted.

Bridget E Kelly: A posting from Paula Cassey: For those of you who are following the status of our son Steve Cassey and his wife Heather Cassey in Nepal they have informed us that there are fewer aftershocks now and they actually managed to catch a few hours sleep last night. They will be leaving Nepal tomorrow and heading to Malaysia as most tourists have been advised to leave the country. Continuued prayers for the Nepali people and eternally grateful for the safety of our family during this crisis.

Paula Cassey: Prayers for your nephew as well Bridget!

Susan Descano: Oh my Bridget E Kelly. I wish them safe travels. Just so sad.

Patty Leever: Sending prayers for both of them.

Kim Romasko: My daughter Meagan works in the area where the riots are taking place and my niece's husband is a Baltimore police officer. Stressful to say the least!

Rosemary Touhill: Kelly strong! They are from good stock..May God watch over them and protect them..and also for you Kim Romasko..

Janet Coury Smith: Wow. That is such a burden. My prayers for your family

Michael Steen: "Challenge" hardly covers it. Hoping they're all right.

Jacki Budicker VanGorden: Prayers for those who are the givers in your family.

Gina Kazimir :Sending wishes for peace and safety.

Kathryn T Nicolella: I hope everyone is safe

Amalfi Ramirez Finnerty: Yes ... Blessings for them!

Gloria Handling: Sending prayers and hugs for their safety and your peace of mind!

Bridget E Kelly: An update from Steve's mother; "Thanks for all the prayers and support. Just heard from our son and they are tired but finally safe in Malaysia after an overnight flight out of Nepal. Glad that they have completed this part of their adventure".

Bridget E Kelly: And Ryan is also safe. So thanks everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you;

Bridget E Kelly: And Heather just posted on her site: Steve and I are very grateful to report that we landed safely in malaysia this morning.  It has been a very emotional few days, as we watch our nepalese friends and neighbors cope with this tragic event. my heart aches for the wonderful people of Nepal, who have showed us so much warmth, kindness and generosity during our short time here. The next few months will certainly be a challenging road ahead, but I have no doubt of their amazing strength and resiliency as they rebuild.

If you have the resources, please, please consider contributing to red cross nepal earthquake relief fund to support this beautiful country and its truly amazing people. thank you.
we love you, nepal. we'll be back soon.

Caged In

Caged In
Palace On The Steps Hotel
Varanasi, India
July 2015

We, the people, ate inside this cage.  The monkeys lingered around, outside, hoping for any morsel of food we might throw at them.

I checked into my hut along the beach and the manager told me, " we have lots of monkeys so be careful. If a pack of monkeys invades your hut, blow this whistle and all of the staff will come running to help you. " Truthfully, I don't think this plan is good enough.
