My Age: 4- 5
School- I didn’t
go to kindergarten because my mother thought I was too small to go to school. However,
most kids didn’t go to kindergarten at this time. I don’t know where I would have attended this
program as itt was only offered at our local public school and my parents were
not proponents of public education.
Music- I’m a Traveling Man by Ricky Nelson was
my favorite song. Kathy, my older sister,
used to sing this song to us every night as we laid in bed. She sang it to us until my mother called in
to the room and told us to be quiet and go to sleep.
Movies- we didn’t
go to movies at this time because my parents were broken and had too many damn
kids. We watched television in the living room on a tiny, black-and-white TV
that only had three channels.
Books- I am sure
my parents read to us as we are all avid readers. But I don’t remember any particular book that
stands out. I think I was too young for
Dr. Seuss.
Travels- We went
nowhere. My parents had no money. We
played in the alleyway.
News events- I
remember watching I Love Lucy on the
television. She was hilarious.
apparently, this is the year she filed for divorce and ended the show. I
particularly love the scene where she and Ethel are in the candy factory line
and they aren’t working fast enough so she is forced to stuff piece after piece
of chocolate in to her mouth.
Family and friends-
- · My mother had six kids in seven years. This was the first year since her marriage that she didn’t have a pregnancy or a child. At some point, she did have a miscarriage but I am not sure when that was.
- · Betty Delvin was my best friend. She lived two doors down from us.
- · At this time, Kathy was 7 ½, Jimmy was 6, I was 5, Sharon was 4, Chris was 2 1/2 and Tricia was 1. My mom had her hands full. My dad worked full time and was just finishing up law school at night.
