Words of Encouragement
September 1988
I started a new job as an assistant principal of a high school. I was the first female assistant principal in the county at this level. I had many, many interviews for jobs at this level and I was in on the lead for so many of these jobs. But when the decision had to be made, I didn't get the job. As I was told repeatedly and unabashed, "Sorry, we just aren't sure a female can do this job."
Finally, finally, I landed a job. I was so happy and so determined to do a great job so that the district administration wouldn't regret their decision and they would wholeheartedly embrace the idea that females can be the educational leaders at the high school level.
On the first day, my new boss comes in to my office and tells me, "I just want to let you know, I'm just being honest with you. But you weren't my first choice for the job. But now that you are here, you have my utmost support."
