Soccer Games
Jamel, Haiti
Thursday, August 8- It's a warm summer night. The World Soccer Cup is
capturing the world and here in Haiti, everyone is abuzz about tonight's
game. When a Haitian soccer team is on the television, those men who are
lucky enough to own a television, bring their prized possession out to the
street and place it on an old chair or a table, anywhere that allows the
masses to view it. Clumps of men gather around this 12” screen. Cheers
and moans announce every goal and mistake. Some men stay at the same
television for the entire night. Others hop from one cluster to another.
There are a few beer bottles but not many. There is no money for that.
There is very little discussion. I just see men sitting on the edge of their
seats, ready to explode.
