Riding The Bigass Bookmobile
Cecil County, MD
November 2015
When I went to grade school a bookmobile came to my school on a regular basis. We had to line up, go in single file, keep the line moving and just grab anything that quickly caught our eyes. Consequently, I can home with some awful, awful, awful choices of books to read. Those books were then stashed on the hallway table until my mother recognized that the book had now laid dormant for more than its allotted two week borrowing period.
Now, I am affiliated with the Cecil County Library and I found out that they have a book mobile. I hadn't seen one of these vehicles since 1966. So I begged for a ride in the bigass bookmobile. And what a treat that was. Ernie, the driver, takes this truck to poorer areas in the county. He parks in people's neighborhoods and kids come running. They may sit inside and explore options. Ernie makes suggestions as does a teacher who stepped inside and offered her expertise. None of the books are checked out. The kids are just asked to return the books when they are finished with them. And if the books are never returned, that's OK because there is now one more book in these kids' homes.
What a wonderful world this bookmobile offers.
