Reading Aloud In China

 Reading Aloud In China
Henan Province, China
Spring 2012

For a short period of time, I went to China to teach leadership skills to young, Chinese women.  We focused our classes around the UN Millennium Goals, one of which was universal education for all.  To address that goal, each Saturday, several of my students made the one hour bus trip to the city to read to children in the public library.  I went along for the first two times and read as well.  However, I quickly discovered that children and parents were not coming to the library to listen to the program but rather to take a look at and take a picture of the American.  My presence there was a distraction to my students and so I stopped joining my students on Saturday. I stopped reading aloud in China.
