My nephew served in Afghanistan for a year. While everyone else wished him good luck and safety, I wished that he not get caught up in the humiliating torture that some of our soldiers executed. When he left the USA, I just had to believe that he would come home safely. But I worried every day that a commanding officer would direct him to do something stupid, something illegal.
I hated the thought that too many of our soldiers went to war to protect us but somehow were caught up in this despicable behaviors and they ended up in jail while their commanding officers received promotions.
He made it home safely on all accounts.
