I was in China during the spring of 2012. I was teaching at Sias University in Henan Province, a rural area of China. I am back again after 3 1/2 years and many things are the same but there are also some big differences.
- Coffee shops are everywhere now. However, they don't serve coffee in these shops.
- The students seem to have just a bit more expendable cash.
- The air seems a little more polluted. I haven't seen the sun in 8 days.
- Standard phones have been replaced by smart phones. Samsung seems to have the market on this campus.
-French Fries are in big demand from the students.
- Pastry shops and desserts are cropping up. It won't be long before China has an obesity problem.
- There are more cars on the road and they are bigger than before. Most of the cars seem to be black or white. There isn't much variation.
- There are a few electric taxi carts on the road.
- The ATM machines are now enclosed in small cubicles, like phone booths. Warnings are issued about credit card theft.
- More high rise buildings have replaced old, dilapidated buildings.
- There isn't as much trash in the classrooms. Most classrooms now have trash cans so the campus seems cleaner.
- The old water fountains have been replaced with larger, grander fountains and these fountains exude a feeling of Las Vegas.
- Beer and wine now available to buy on campus and a few German beers are in available.
