Leaving the Jungles of Peru

Leaving the Jungles of Peru

Living in The Rain Forest along the Amazon River

August 2002

Afterthoughts

-          I think I will never get used to the great divide between the haves and the have-nots in this world.

-          This lodge, though rustic, is well managed.  Every detail is addressed and maintained.

-          I want to begin to use more alternative forms of medicine.  I want to consult a shaman.

-          There are beautiful birds in Peru and I could spend days and days and days just looking at them.

-          I liked the fact that people came and went during this trip.  It forced me to extend myself to lots of different people.

-          Everyone visiting here felt a little like scientist.  We all studied this environment as well as stumbled through it.

-          We have to do something about the depletion of the rain forest.

-          It’s a shame that those beautiful little frogs are so poisonous.  They are so adorable.

-          I do not like planta.  They are tasteless and tough to eat.

-       I need to start bringing more things for the local people.  Their apperception of the used eye glasses really took me by surprise.  I wish I had brought more of them.

-       I should have paid more attention in biology class when I was in high school.  There is a great world out there and I do not know enough about it.

-       I don’t mind dogs and cat and giraffe and elephants and tigers but I hate bugs and bats and there are a lot of bugs and bats in the Amazon.

-       I sweat a lot during this trip and I usually do not sweat.

-       I was too chicken to ride the zip line and now I am disappointed in myself.

-       It surprised me to hear that the men were only going to ride the zip line if I did.  Their ego could not have handled watching me do something that they were afraid to do.

-       Sometimes I feel like a sloth.

-       I love to be near the water.

-       I wonder what my personality would be like if I grew up in a jungle.  Would I be less defiant and less self righteous about so many things?

-       I am in terrible physical condition.

-       I like being in boats.

-       The beer was served in pint bottles.  I like that size.

-       We saw giant lily pads.  I wanted to take a nap on one of them.

-       I love the sound of rain in the rain forest.

-       By the end of the week, I did not have anything that was dry.

-       I would like to come back here during the rainy season.  I want to see the differences.

-       All of our guides were well versed in all aspects of plant life, birds, animals and the environment.

-       No one wore a watch.  They told the time by paying attention to the position of the sun.

-       I need to pack lighter and more efficiently.  I need to learn to bring less with me.

-       For most of the trip, I was the only female in the lodge.  This was a first for me.

-       Most people came to this trip as solo travelers.
