Getting the News (Eventually)

Getting the News (Eventually)

Peter Hall- Foreign Faculty Housing
Sias University
Henan Province, China
November 2015

There is a coffee cafĂ© in the lobby of Peter Hall, the foreign faculty-housing unit.  I will be living here this month as I will be teaching here. Every effort has been made to simulate the USA coffee shops so that the faculty feel right at home.  I can get a latte, an herbal tea, a pastry and even a beer.  There are places to sit and read an abundance of newspapers.    There is the Wall Street Journal, Asia Edition available for free. There are plenty of editions of this journal and other.  The only problem, this journal is from April 29, 2014, almost a year and a half after publication.  The other journals are even older.

The headlines: Obama Avoids Angering Beijing- at Least for Now.  As I left the USA, three days ago, I read about tension between our two countries over some international water dispute. I guess there is no point in worrying about it now, as I do not seem to have any way to stay on top of this event.

US pledges ironclad defense of the Philippines. I don’t have any memory of this issue either.

Another headline read China Party Official Caged With Graft; “Li Chuncheng took advantage of his position. Mr. Li couldn’t be reached for comment. He hasn’t been seen in public since late 2012 when the party announced he was under investigation and it wasn’t know whether he had a lawyer. His family similarly could not be reached.”  I tried to Google this name but I can’t access my Google search engine.  I will have to see if he has an account on WECHAT, the Chinese social media site to rival our Facebook and Instagram. Or maybe, I will look him up when I get home.
