Monkey Thief
Sunrise Restaurant
Varanasi, India
July 2015
The Sunrise Restaurant is on a rooftop, near a large monkey
colony. It is caged around the perimeter in an effort to keep the monkeys away
from the customers. At any one time, 10 to 15 monkeys are screeching and
climbing the cage walls, begging for food.
I am sitting at my table in this caged resultant when I hear
the gate open up. I hear movement but I don’t see anyone come in. Then I see
him, a monkey. He looks at me and I stand up to intimidate him. I raise my
voice and yell which startles the kitchen help but not him. This only causes
him to move more quickly. He runs right to the refrigerator. He must have been
watching this refrigerator because he knows exactly what side opens up. He
takes his right hand and pulls the door open. He takes his left hand and grabs
a loaf of bread. And he is out of before I even have time to get out of my seat
and around the table.
The fact that he had his whole plan so well choreographed is
admirable. It stopped me in my tracks and he got away without a hitch.
