Since 2012, I taught, on two occasions, at Sias University in Henan Provence, China. I was a facilitator for the World Academy for the Future of Women.  We teach young women how to be global leaders who focus on the UN Millennium Goal.  There is also a Men's Academy for the Future of Women.  This experience has been so rewarding to me that I continue to write about it on my blog.  I post current updates on my students and their successes. Feel free to take a look and see what these ambitious, eager, thoughtful people are doing to make this world a better place.

My Mom Is Gay

My Mom Is Gay
Atlanta, Georgia
September 2015

I sitting at a bar with a married couple that I don’t know that well. We got talking about our parents and Dan tells me, “My mom is gay. I’m sure of it. She never told me she was gay and I’m sure she is. She may not even be aware of it. She lived in an age when you just couldn’t be gay. She’s 83 now and she still has a lot of gay friends.  They are always over the house.  One couple just got married.”

“So you’re telling me your dad know she was gay. Was that part of their marriage,” I ask trying not to nosy but really intrigued by this statement.

“No, no. my dad left when I was two. They were dating and then she got pregnant. I think they were 18 and he didn’t hang around too long. So he was never really in the picture. But my mom, she raised me and there were always lots and lots of women around the house. They were all single but they all hung together. My dad was not part of my life. Maybe I saw three or four times in my lifetime. When I was in my 20s, I try to make amends with him. But that just wasn’t happening. So really I was just raised by lots of women.

His wife chimes in, “that’s why he’s so great today. That’s why he gets women’s issues because he was surrounded by so many strong women. He grew up with so many women.”

He continues, “I wish my mom could it acknowledge that she’s gay but she can’t. I never bring it up with her but I always just assumed my mom was a lesbian. She didn’t have to tell me that. I just knew.”

I Shouldn't Admit to This, BUT.....

I Shouldn't Admit to This, BUT.....
Philadelphia, PA
May 2016

Shamefully, I have gotten in the very bad habit of taking photos while I am driving. Most of the time, when I see something interesting, I will pull over.  But I can't always do that, like when I took this picture.  I was making a right hand turn at 30th and South Street and it was right around rush hour.  Fortunately for me, that time of day causes traffic to move a little slower so I had time to set up this shoot.

Now that I have confessed my bad behavior to you, maybe it's time to mend my ways.

Massai Tribe

Massai Tribe
Tanzania
February 2016

They jump.  They jump a lot and really very high.  So when they asked me to join them in a little jumping fun, I had to decline.  I have arthritis in both of my knees and jumping is just too damn painful. And I have reached the age where it is best for me to keep both feet firmly planted on the ground at all times.

As they jumped, I foolishly attempted to participate by gyrating in a circular motion, hoping no one would notice that my feet, together or singular, were not leaving the ground.  They laughed at me.  They pointed at me. They attempted to shame me. But I didn't care. I wasn't jumping.
